Marv Bachmeier grew up on a farm near Harvey, North Dakota, and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Devils Lake. Bachmeier was an outstanding basketball player at North Dakota State University, and he set many records there. His records include a season scoring average of 27 ppg in 1959-60 and a career average of nearly 24 ppg. In addition, he ranks fourth in career points. He was a three-time All-American, won three straight scoring titles, and was named as the North Central Conference's MVP in 1960. To add to his distinguished list of accomplishments, Bachmeier is also an NDSU Athletic Hall of Famer.

Bachmeier came to the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1968 as head men's basketball coach. He coached several sports in his long tenure at the University. In 1976, he succeeded Herschel Lysaker as the college's Athletic Director. He remained in that position until his retirement in June, 1999. His 31-year career at UMC saw many changes, including the transition from junior college competition to the NCAA Division II level and, ultimately, becoming a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Faculty member and long-time colleague, Dan Svedarsky, summed up Bachmeier's tenure at UMC by stating, "He maintained an impressive level of integrity and consistency of athletic programs on really a shoestring budget. He is a shoo-in for this honor."
