Minnesota Crookston Softball Heads to North Dakota for Big Weekend

Bismarck, N.D. -- Minnesota Crookston softball will head to North Dakota for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, starting with UMary on Saturday and heading north for a doubleheader with Minot State on Sunday.

 

The Golden Eagles head into the six game slate this week, all on the road, with a 10-27 record and 4-8 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 1-3 weekend last weekend, being swept by Northern State and splitting with Jamestown. The Golden Eagles currently sit in 11th in the NSIC.

Minnesota Crookston (10-27, 4-8 NSIC)

Minnesota Crookston softball is back this weekend for six important games in the NSIC, all on the road. The week will start with a midweek doubleheader on the road at MSU Moorhead on Wednesday. The Dragons are 4-31 on the season.

 

The Golden Eagles are hitting .269 as a team on the season, led by freshmen Emily Kalina and Megan Surgenor, who are each hitting above .300. Kalina leads the way with a .321 average, while Surgenor is hitting .320. Valerie VanZant is another freshman who has had a fantastic season, hitting .299 with 13 runs scored and 11 RBI. VanZant was 5-6 in the doubleheader against the Jimmies. Rayna French also had a nice weekend, collecting six hits in 15 at-bats. The Golden Eagles are 41-46 on stolen bases this season and are fifth in the conference in stolen bases.

 

In the circle, the Golden Eagles got a really big performance from Gabriella Gomez, who pitched her first career shutout and complete game. Her previous high of innings pitched was earlier this season, where she went 4.2 innings against Sioux Falls and Gannon. Gomez leads the Golden Eagles in appearances this season with 15. Hannah Trzinski and Megan Surgenor have combined for 27 appearances this season, while Charlotte Dombrowski leads the Golden Eagles in wins and ERA.

 

Minnesota Crookston has thrown out 22 potential stealers this season, led by Madeleine Murray and Rayna French, who have thrown out nine and seven, respectively. Those numbers lead the conference.

 

UMary (10-26, 0-14 NSIC)

The Marauders have struggled this season, losing 14 games in a row, having not won a game in more than a month. The Marauders last win came on March 5, when they beat West Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 5-1.

 

The Marauders have scored 36 runs in conference games, being outscored 102-36. UMary has three hitters above .300, led by junior outfielder Kaitlyn McLaughlin, who is hitting .361 with nine RBI. Jenel Mallari and Jianna Cota have combined for 28 RBI on the season. Genevieve Hastings leads the team with three home runs, while Daisy Sparrow has a pair of home runs on the year.

 

In the circle, Arria Johnson and Jayleen Rojas have combined for 23 starts and have all the teams' wins in the circle. Johnson is 6-9 on the season and Rojas is 4-5 on the year. Johnson has six complete games on the year. Johnson is 13th in the NSIC in innings pitched with 91.

 

Minot State (22-16, 7-7 NSIC)

The Beavers have played really well as of late, winning five of their last six games, not having to leave Minot in their last 10 games. The Beavers have controlled the series, winning 38 games against the Golden Eagles.

 

The Beavers have a team average above .300 and have four players hitting above .300. Paige Kellogg leads the Beavers with a .353 average and has three home runs and 21 runs knocked in. Sara Van Wickler is having an all-conference type season, hitting .346 with 19 extra-base hits, including eight triples. Anna LaCount leads the Beavers with 22 RBI. Minot State have hit 25 home runs on the season, which is fifth in the NSIC.

 

The Beavers have a trio of pitchers that they can go to in the circle. Katie Newberry, Taylor Kruser and Kierra Fournier have combined for 34 of the 38 starts in the circle and each have ERA's below four. Fournier and Newberry are each 6-4 on the season.
