Mankato, Minn. - Golden Eagle Softball was in Mankato, Minnesota today to play a doubleheader against Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Golden Eagles lost game one by a score of 6-0 and game two in five innings by a score of 10-2. That drops the Golden Eagles to 15-39 on the season, 8-20 in the NSIC. The Mavericks improved to 31-21 and 18-10 in the NSIC.

Game One

The Mavericks started the game strong, striking out the first two Golden Eagles batters before the third batter popped out to second base. The Mavericks proceeded to score three runs on three hits to take the 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The second inning saw zero runs scored for either team, with both teams only having three batters. Charlotte Dombrowksi (Sr., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) struck out the first batter of the inning for her first strikeout of the day.

The Golden Eagles registered their first hit of the afternoon when Irelyn Spencer (R-Jr., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) singled into center field. Emily Kalina (Fr., CF/LHP, Rice Lake, Wis.) reached on an error, but neither were brought home and the Golden Eagles still trailed 3-0. The Mavericks then scored in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to four.

Megan Surgenor (Fr., RHP/3B, Andover, Minn.) recorded a double for the Golden Eagles' only hit of the fourth inning. The Mavericks also registered one hit in the fourth, and neither team brought home any runs.

The fifth inning saw the Golden Eagles get two runners on base when Irelyn Spencer was walked to first base and Madeline Murray (So., C/3B, Abilene, KS) singled to left field. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless and the Mavericks drove in their fifth run.

The sixth inning saw the Mavericks bring in their sixth run of the day while also striking out two of the three batters for the Golden Eagles.

Irelyn Spencer recorded her second hit of the afternoon in the seventh inning, but the Golden Eagles were unable to get her past first base. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless in game one, falling 6-0.

Game Two

The Golden Eagles recorded one hit in the first inning of game two when Rayna French (Jr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) bunted to first and advanced Valerie VanZant (Fr., MIF, Salina, KS) to second. The Mavericks completely took over the game the second they took the field to bat. They scored nine opening inning runs on seven hits. Their runs came from: three singles, two doubles, one ground out, and one two run home run.

Neither team recorded another hit until the fourth inning when the Mavericks recorded three more hits and one run thanks to a single by Ireland Broderick. It was now 10-0 Mavericks.

The Golden Eagles had their best at bat of the day in the top of the fifth, Megan Surgenor singled to center field, which advanced Hannah Trzinski (So., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.) to second. Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.) then singled up the middle, advancing Surgenor and Trzinski one base each. Irelyn Spencer was walked next, bringing Trzinski home for the first Golden Eagles run of the day. Madeline Murray also got walked, bringing Surgenor home to put the score at 10-2. Unfortunately, that was not enough for the Golden Eagles to extend the game, and the final score stood as 10-2 after five innings.
