Minnesota State Sweeps Minnesota Crookston on Friday Night

Mankato, Minn. – Following the first set, Minnesota Crookston played well on the road at Minnesota State, but the Mavericks were able to defeat the Golden Eagles in straight sets (11-25, 23-25, 18-25) on Friday night in the Taylor Center.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 3-7 (0-2 NSIC).

Set One
The first set would start out as a sign to come for the Mavericks early on. MSU would jump out to a 5-0 lead.

A service error would be the start for the Golden Eagles to chip away at the lead and make it 5-4, which also included two kills from Emma Malek (So., MH, Plainfield, Ill.) and Carizma Muth (R-Fr., OH, Randolph, Wis.).

From that point, it would be all Mavs, who would win the first set by 14.

Set Two
The Golden Eagles would settle in during the middle set and would jump out to an early 3-1 lead, capped by a Muth service ace.

A Maya Jones (So., OH, New Braunfels, Texas) kill would help give the Golden Eagles another two point lead, at 7-5.

The Mavericks would eventually take a 12-8 lead, but the Golden Eagles would chip away and make it 13-11.

MSU would again take a lead at 20-14, but yet again, the maroon and gold would chip away and make it 21-19, with a pair of kills from Muth and Madison Carsten (Sr., OH, Wadena, Minn.).

A Kailee Waasdorp (So., DS, West Fargo, N.D.) service ace would make it 23-22, but the Mavericks would put away the Golden Eagles with a two point win and take a 2-0 lead in the set.

Set Three
The Golden Eagles would stay close early on and would score two straight points with kills from Malek and Jones to make it a 4-3 lead for MSU.

The Mavs would work their lead to 12-5 and the Golden Eagles would try and cut into the lead, but MSU proved to be too much, winning the final set, 25-18 and the match, 3-0.

Individual Stats
Carsten led the way with eight kills on 25 total attacks, hitting .240 on the night. Jones finished with seven kills on 20 total attacks and just one attacking error. Malek had five kills in the match.
