Crookston, Minn. – St. Cloud State showed why they are one of the best teams in the nation, spoiling the home opener for the Golden Eagles in three sets (17-25, 12-25, 13-25).
Minnesota Crookston falls to 3-6 (0-1 NSIC).
Set One
The Huskies would jump out to a quick 4-1 lead, but
Emma Malek (So., MH, Plainfield, Ill.) and
Maya Jones (So., OH, New Braunfels, Texas) would collect a massive block to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
The Huskies would extend their lead to 9-3, but the Golden Eagles would score five in a row, including a kill from
Lexi Scharold (Fr., MH, Alexandria, Kent.) and a block in that stretch. That run would force a Huskies timeout.
Out of the timeout, it would be all Huskies, who would stretch their lead to nine and win the first set by eight.
Set Two
The Huskies would jump out quickly to a 5-0 lead, but a
Carizma Muth (R-Fr., OH, Randolph, Wis.) kill would put the Golden Eagles on the board.
SCSU would eventually extend their lead to 14-6, but back-to-back points from the maroon and gold would make it a 14-8 set.
The Huskies would do enough to close out the middle set for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
Once again, SCSU would start fast, this time a 6-1 lead. Jones and
Madison Carsten (So., OH, Wadena, Minn.) would collect a pair of kills in a row to cut the lead to 6-3.
Trailing 9-6, the Golden Eagles would get within one again, following a huge block from
Baily Teveldal (Fr., S, Baltic, S.D.) and a kill from Muth.
A 10-9 lead would quickly balloon into a 21-9 lead for the nationally-ranked Huskies and that lead would turn into the win in the third set.
Individual Stats
Minnesota Crookston was led by Scharold, who finished with eight kills on 15 swings, good for a .467 attacking percentage, the second highest in her career. Jones and Muth finished with six kills, while Carsten added three.
It was another double-digit dig match for
Kailee Waasdorp (So., DS, West Fargo, N.D.), who finished with 15. Teveldal added 21 assists and seven digs.
