Minnesota Crookston Falls In a Pair of Thrillers to Wayne State College on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Crookston, Minn.—It was the final two games for the six Golden Eagle softball seniors who have been wearing the maroon and gold for four seasons.

The Golden Eagles hosted Wayne State College for the final two regular season games for both teams. The Wildcats came from behind in game one to win 8-6 and held off a furious Golden Eagle rally in game two to defeat and sweep the Golden Eagles 4-3.

The Golden Eagles end their season at 13-41 (2-28 NSIC), while the Wildcats finish their campaign at 15-32 overall (6-24 NSIC).

Game One
In game one, the Golden Eagles got an outstanding start from Paige Pitlick (Jr., P, Jordan, Minn.), who went 6.2 innings in game one.

The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start by scoring two runs in the early inning to go ahead 2-0 on a Maggie Morales (Sr., 3B, Tuscon, Ariz.) two-RBI single.

WSC would answer back in the third inning, but the Golden Eagles made a bevy of outstanding defensive plays, including Haley Strachan (Sr., OF, Phoenix, Ariz.) who threw out a Wildcat trying to stretch a single into a double for a big out in the inning.

The game would stay at 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles would load the bases. That's when Allison Martinson (Fr., UT, Grafton, N.D.) came through in the clutch and delivered a three-run, bases clearing double to put the Golden Eagles up 5-1.

That would be the score in the top of the seventh when the Wildcat bats would wake up. The Wildcats would use six hits and three Golden Eagle errors to score seven in the seventh inning to lead 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. All of the Wildcats runs came with two outs.

The Golden Eagles would try and rally and even scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats held off Minnesota Crookston to win game one 8-6.

Game Two
Game two wouldn't see as much offense as we saw in game one, but the Wildcats would do what the Golden Eagles did in game one and that is score two runs early on, coming off a Emily Chandler two run homerun in the top of the first.

The game would stay at 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Wildcats would use another two-run homerun, this time off the bat of Kamryn Sparks, to put the Wildcats up 4-0.

Minnesota Crookston would fight back and would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases to start the inning, started by back-to-back singles from Leah Macias (Fr., OF, West Covina, Calif.) and Strachan. Malia Pula (Jr., UT, Gilroy, Calif.) would come through with the bases loaded with a two RBI single that scored Leah Macias and Strachan, to cut the Wildcat lead in half at 4-2.

Rocky Bjorge (Sr., 1B/3B, Prior Lake, Minn.) would follow up Pula's single with another single that scored Hannah Macias (Fr., OF, West Covina, Calif.), who reached after getting hit by a pitch.

The Golden Eagles weren't able to scrape across another run in the bottom of the sixth or seventh and fell to Wayne State 4-3.

The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Leah Macias who collected two hits and scored a run as well. Playing in their final game, Bjorge and Morales collected a hit in game two. The Golden Eagles had six hits as a team.

In the circle, senior Mikayla Jones (Sr., P, Huxley, Iowa) went 5.1 innings, while allowing four runs. Jones picked up the loss. Taylor Graven came in for relief of Jones and went 1.2 innings while allowing just one hit.

The Golden Eagles will miss the six seniors that have helped shape the program for the future. Bjorge, Morales, Strachan, Jones, Maycee Trujillo (Sr., 3B, Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Sam Rarick (Sr., UT, East Grand Forks, Minn.) will all be greatly missed and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors!
