No. 10 Warriors Catch Fire in 96-72 Win Over Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of an outstanding shooting performance Saturday evening from No. 10 Winona State University. The Warriors shot 67.8 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from beyond the arc as they out-scored UMC 96-72 Sat., Jan. 30 at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles fall to 14-6 (11-5 NSIC) with Saturday's loss, while Winona State continues to hold on to first in the NSIC South with a 21-2 (14-2 NSIC) mark. UMC is now tied for third in the NSIC North standing with St. Cloud State University, one game behind Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University in first.

UMC had a strong day overall from the field, going 27-of-55 for 49.1 percent from the field and 11-of-27 for 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, they were 7-of-8 for 87.5 percent from the charity stripe. However, the Golden Eagles could not stop the Warrior shooters. Winona State would go 40-of-59 for 67.8 percent from the field, 11-of-16 for 68.8 percent from behind the three-point line and 5-of-6 for 83.3 percent from the foul line.

The Golden Eagles had five players score in double-figures. Seniors Alexa Thielman (G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Sciences) and Katrina Nordick (F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) both finished with 14 points. Caitlin Michaelis (Fr., G, Marsfield, Wis./Undecided) saved one of her best performances for her 19th birthday. Michaelis finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Alison Hughes (Fr., G, Janesville, Wis./Early Childhood Education) had 10 points and five assists, while Isieoma Odor (R-Fr., F/C, Bloomington, Minn./Health Management) also had 10 points.

Winona State was led by the sharp shooting of Connor Nagle, who was hitting almost every shot she put up there. Nagle would finish with 21 points on 7-of-9, all from beyond the arc. She added five assists. Alexis Foley and Kayla Timmerman each chipped in 17 points. Foley complimented her point total with 11 assists to complete a double-double. Hannah McGlone had 14 points and eight boards, while Tara Roelofs had 11 points.

Winona State narrowly out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 25-23.

The Warriors took control early of the game and wouldn't look back. Winona State would out-score UMC 53-33 in the first half led by 18 first-half points from Nagle, 12 from McGlone and 11 from Foley.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road next weekend as they take on University of Sioux Falls Fri., Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. and Southwest Minnesota State University Sat., Feb. 6 at 5 p.m.
