CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team won their seventh-straight game 74-60 over University of Minnesota Duluth Sun., Jan. 10 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The win was UMC's first victory over the Bulldogs since Dec. 5, 2008. The Golden Eagles move to 11-3 (8-2 NSIC) with Sunday's win, while UMD falls to 4-9 (4-6 NSIC) with the loss. The victory moved UMC into a tie with Northern State University for first in the NSIC North.
UMC was led by
Alexa Thielman (Sr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science), who had 21 points on 7-of-15 from the field and 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. She added six rebounds and one assist. Thielman's seven treys set the school-record for three-pointers in a game, surpassing five players who had six threes, most recently teammate
Alison Hughes (Fr., G, Janesville, Wis./Early Childhood Education), who hit six three-pointers against St. Cloud State University Saturday.
In addition to Thielman,
Katrina Nordick (Sr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 7-of-10 from the field.
Micaela Noga (So., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn./Health Management) added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Isieoma Odor (R-Fr., F/C, Bloomington, Minn./Health Management) played important minutes off the bench with seven points and six boards.
The Golden Eagles were 25-of-54 for 46.3 percent from the field and were 12-of-24 for 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Minnesota Duluth was led by Allyson Harris, who had 13 points on 6-of-10 from the field, while Sammy Kozlowski added 121 points and eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs were 23-of-63 from the field for 36.5 percent and were 9-of-31 for 29 percent from beyond the arc.
UMC would go into the second quarter with a three-point advantage after UMD cut the deficit on a Jenna Orr trey. The two teams would play back-and-forth in the second quarter with the Bulldogs taking a two-point lead (33-31) going into the half on an Emma Boehm jumper.
The Golden Eagles would take the lead in the third on an Odor lay-up with 5:59 remaining. UMC would then build on that bucket and go on a 9-0 run led by five points by Odor to go ahead 48-40 with 2:05 left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would go into the break with a 51-43 advantage.
UMC would open the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run, culminating with a Nordick lay-up to make it 60-45 with 6:35 left in the game. UMD would get the deficit down to seven on a Kenzie Kane three, but the Golden Eagles would end the game on a 7-0 run to win 74-60.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road to face Concordia University, St. Paul Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. and Minnesota State University, Mankato Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.
