UMC Softball Falls 9-4 and 9-3 to Wayne State

| Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.-  The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 9-4 and 9-3 to Wayne State College (Neb.) Sun., April 12 at the UMC Softball Field in Crookston, Minn. UMC would hang with the Wildcats early on in game two, but four runs in the fifth led by a Melanie Alyea three-run home run would lead Wayne State to the win.

UMC falls to 4-32 (0-18 NSIC) with Sunday's pair of losses. Wayne State improves to 24-14 (10-8 NSIC) with the pair of wins.

Wayne State was led in the 9-3 game one win over Minnesota Crookston led by a grand slam from Sam O'Brien.

In game two, UMC would give the ball to Jordyn Derflinger (Jr., OF/RHP, Henderson, Nev./Elementary Education). Derflinger would pitch 4.2 innings and give up six runs, only two of them earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts. Sammy Knudson (So., RHP, Fergus Falls, Minn./Health Science) would give up three runs, two of them earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Bailey Braatz (So., RHP, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) had a scoreless inning of relief, pitching one shutout inning.

Wayne State would start the game two scoring as Lexie Loos scored on an error to put the Wildcats up 1-0.

The Golden Eagles would respond and take the lead 2-1. Victoria Bayliss (Fr., OF, West Bloomfield, Mich./Elemetnary Education) would cross the plate on an Alexis Khoshaba (Jr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia/Sports and Rec Management) groundout. Shelby Hollinger (Sr., 2B, Neudorf, Saskatchewan) then scored on a passed ball.

The Wildcats added two in the third as Kaiti Williams doubled to drive in Loos and Kelcie Bormann singled to plate Williams to put Wayne State up 3-2.

Wayne State would add to their lead in the fifth led by an Alyea three-run home run to drive in herself, O'Brien and Williams to make it 7-2.

The Golden Eagles added one in the fifth as Kaylin Beatty (Jr., OF, Andover, Minn./Animal Science) scored on a groundout.

Wayne State would extend their lead to 9-3 on a Bormann single to drive in Jordan King and Katelyn Wobken.

The Golden Eagles would threaten in the seventh getting one run as Allison Foley (Jr., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting) doubled to drive in Beatty. The Golden Eagles would however leave runners stranded on second and third as Wayne State hung on for the 9-4 win.

UMC was led in game two by Hollinger, who was 3-of-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Foley would go 2-of-4 with one RBI.

Bormann got the game two win for Wayne State, going seven innings and giving up four runs, one of them earned, on six hits.

The Golden Eagles will return to play Tues., April 14 at 1 and 3 p.m. against University of Minnesota Duluth.
