GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team fell 72-47 to University of North Dakota Sun., Nov. 8 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-1 in their exhibition games this season as they came away with a big victory over North Dakota State University in their exhibition earlier in the week.
The Golden Eagles struggled from the field Sunday, shooting just 13-of-51 for 25.5 percent from the field and 1-of-12 from beyond the arc for 8.3 percent. They did shoot well from the charity stipe, going 20-of-24 for 83.3 percent.
UMC was led by Preseason NSIC North Player of the Year
Katrina Nordick (Sr., F, Perham, Minn.), who had 10 points and five boards.
Alexa Thielman (Sr., G, Buffalo, Minn.) added nine points and four rebounds, while
Megan Taylor (R-Jr., F/C, Estelline, S.D.) had six points off of the bench.
UND, who went 17-15 (9-9 Big Sky), controlled the game, going 28-of-61 for 45.9 percent from the field and 4-of-11 for 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. They also dominated the glass, out-rebounding UMC 50 to 28. North Dakota was led by Mia Loyd, who had 18 points and eight boards, while Makailah Dyer added 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Lexi Klabo chipped in 10 points and seven boards.
The Golden Eagles will officially open up the season Nov. 13 and 14 with games in Puerto Rico against University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
UMC will look to follow up a strong season in 2014-15, in which they finished third in the NISC North with a 14-14 (12-10 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles were led by Nordick and Thielman each earning All-NSIC First Team honors. UMC was picked to finish fourth in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with Nordick earning Preseason Player of the Year honors. UMC returns four starters from the 2014-15 roster, including Nordick, Thielman, Micaela noga (So., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) and
Emily Gruber (So., F/C, Monticello, Minn.).
