(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Softball team hosted the Northern State University Wolves today in NSIC action. Both teams came in with three conference wins and were looking for victories to move up in the conference rankings. The Wolves took advantage of eight total Golden Eagle errors on the day to win 8-0 and 7-6 for an NSIC sweep.
The Golden Eagles tallied four hits in the first game from
Gina Delisa (C, Fr, College Station, Texas),
Stacey Marcum (P, Jr, Merrill, Wis.),
Josee Plante (3B, Fr, Manitou, Manitoba), and
Paige Schaust.
The Minnesota, Crookston bats woke up in game two with the team totaling 13 knocks. The Golden Eagles found themselves down 3-0 in the third inning before putting two on the board.
Sara Wiedmaier (1B, Jr, Marengo, Ill.) singled to left center to score
Courtney Bridge (SS, Fr, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) who reached on an error. Delisa then drove in
Rachel Schoenborn (2B, So, Anchorage, Alaska) who reached on a fielder's choice. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Sammy Berglin (OF, So, Alexandria, Minn.) blasted her seventh homerun of the season just about over the pine trees in left field. The Wolves knocked in a go-ahead run in the sixth but that lead was relinquished in the bottom half of the inning as Bridge knocked in Berglin who reached on a fielder's choice. The seventh inning saw the Golden Eagle defense cough up two costly errors that led to a three-run homerun by NSU with none of the runs being earned. Minnesota, Crookston made a game of it as Wiedmaier singled to left field and Delisa hit another ball into the pine trees for her second homerun of the season to get the game to 7-6. That was all the Golden Eagles could do as the NSU third baseman made a fine play and throw to first to end the game.
The Golden Eagles return to the UMC Softball Field again tomorrow to host the University of Mary. The start of the double-headers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
