(Moorhead, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Softball team traveled to MSU Moorhead today to take on the Dragons in an NSIC double-header. The Dragons had the hot bats in game one tallying 18 hits and earning a 13-0 win. Game two saw Minnesota, Crookston outplay MSU Moorhead in all aspects of the game except for the one that matters. The Dragons able to fend off 12 Golden Eagle hits to stay close and take a 6-5 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In game one, the Golden Eagles got two hits from
Courtney Bridge (SS, Fr, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and
Sara Wiedmaier (1B, Jr, Marengo, Ill.).
Sammy Berglin (OF, So, Alexandria, Minn.) earned the other hit for the Golden Eagles.
In game two, the Dragons scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch to go up 1-0. The Golden Eagles responded in the third inning as
Josee Plante (3B, Fr, Manitou, Manitoba) singled and was later driven in on a Bridge double down the right field line. Minnesota, Crookston added two more in the fourth as
Rachel Schoenborn (2B, So, Anchorage, Alaska) double to right center to lead off the inning and later scored on an error. Berglin reached on the error and was driven in on a base hit to left field by
Paige Schaust (P, So, Delano, Minn.). MSUM tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth with a two run homerun but the Golden Eagles responded in the fifth with a run. Bridge led off with a single and was sacrificed over by
Hilary Brown (OF, Jr, Mosinee, Wis.). Wiedmaier hit a deep ground ball to the shortstop which allowed Bridge to score from third. Moorhead scored a run in the bottom of the fifth but UMC again answered with a run in the sixth as Berglin led off the inning and was later driven in by
Shelby Hollinger (UT, Fr, Neudorf, Saskatchewan) who had a solid at-bat and earned a single to left field. In the bottom of the seventh the Dragon's led off with a single. The runner was sacrificed over to second and was later driven in. AJ Hoefer ended the game with a double to right center to score the runner at first and take the 6-5 victory.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Bridge who hit an outstanding .714 (5-7). She scored one run and knocked in one RBI and had sensational .857 slugging percentage. Wiedmaier followed Bridge with a .500 (3-6) batting average and Berglin closed out the top UMC hitters with a .333 (2-6) batting average.
Kelli Burns (P, So, Montrose, Minn.) three an outstanding second game going 6.2 innings while giving up just four earned runs.
The Golden Eagles return to the UMC Softball Field tomorrow to take on Minot State in a non-conference double-header. The first game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
