Golden Eagle Softball Sweeps Bemidji State 5-3 and 6-2

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Softball team traveled to Bemidji State University on Wednesday to take on the Beavers in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles advanced to 3-3 in NSIC play with extra inning 5-3 and 6-2 victories over BSU.
 
In game one, the Golden Eagles and Bemidji State entered the eighth inning knotted up at three apiece. UMC's Paige Schaust (OF, So, Delano, Minn.) opened the inning with a single. She was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josee Plante (3B, Fr, Manitou, Manitoba). Gina Delisa (C, Fr, College Station, Texas) drove in Schaust for the eventual game-winning run with a double and advanced to third on the throw home. Annie Erickson (2B, Fr, Ogema, Minn.) entered to pinch run for Delisa and scored on a wild pitch by the BSU pitcher to secure the 5-3 victory. Stacey Marcum (P, Jr, Merrill, Wis.) threw all eight innings for the Golden Eagles. She gave up three earned runs and struck out six Bemidji batters.
 
In game two, the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0. BSU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Minnesota, Crookston blew the game open in the top of the eighth with four runs. Hilary Brown (OF, Jr, Mosinee, Wis.) reached on an error by the pitcher. Sammy Berglin (OF, So, Alexandria, Minn.) followed Brown with a single to left field advancing Brown to third base. Courtney Bridge (SS, Fr, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) flew out to the pitcher in foul territory but both the pitcher and catcher went for the ball so Brown was able to tag-up from third and score. Kelli Burns (OF, So, Montrose, Minn.) singled and Rachel Schoenborn (2B, So, Anchorage, Alaska) reached on a fielder's choice and was followed with a Sara Wiedmaier (1B, Jr, Marengo, Ill.) single to score Burns. Plante singled to right field to score Wiedmaier and Schoenborn to close out the scoring and give the Golden Eagles a 6-2 victory. Schaust pitched six solid innings giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Marcum earned her second victory of the day going two innings and giving up two hits and no runs.
 
Leading the way in the double-header was Plante who hit .429 (3-7) on the day. She scored one run and drove in two RBI. Wiedmaier followed Plante with a .375 (3-8) batting average. She also scored one run and drove in two. Marcum threw 10 innings and earned a 2.10 ERA while picking up two victories.
 
The Golden Eagles travel to Southwest Minnesota State and #13 Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday and Sunday. The double-headers on both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
