Golden Eagle Softball Earns NSIC Split with Upper Iowa

Courtney Bridge
(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Softball team closed out the opening NSIC weekend today as the team hosted Upper Iowa University. The Golden Eagles defeated the Peacocks 3-2 in the first game but fell 11-6 in the night cap.

In game one, the Golden Eagles got on the board in the third inning as Gina Delisa (C, Fr, College Station, Texas) walked and she was knocked in by Sam Berglin (OF, So, Alexandria, Minn.) who hit her sixth homerun of the season. UMC added one more run in the fifth as Josee Plante (3B, Fr, Manitou, Manitoba) was hit by a pitch. She was moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Delisa and driven in on a single by leadoff hitter Courtney Bridge (SS, Fr, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia). Pitcher Stacey Marcum (P, Jr, Merrill, Wis.) threw a gem going all seven innings. She gave up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three Peacocks.

In game two, the Golden Eagles gave up four runs in the top of the second inning but responded to score six runs in the bottom of the second. Unfortunately that would be the only offense for Minnesota, Crookston as the offense stalled and five fielding errors gave UIU seven more runs to take the 11-6 victory.

Leading the way in the double-header today was Bridge who hit a sensational .571 (4-7). She hit one double, scored one run, drove in one RBI and earned a .714 slugging percentage. Kelli Burns (OF, So, Montrose, Minn.) hit .333 (2-6). She hit the team's first triple of the season, scored two runs, drove in two RBI and earned a .667 slugging percentage.

The Golden Eagles travel to Bemidji State University on Wednesday, March 28. The NSIC double-header begins at 1 p.m.
