(Aberdeen, S.D.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Softball team traveled to Aberdeen, S.D. on Thursday, April 28 to play Northern State University in an NSIC double-header. After a pre-game warm up in 70 degrees and sun, a cloud dampened both teams' spirits dumping enough rain to flood the Golden Eagle dugout and field. After an hour and 20 minutes of working on the field, the games got underway. Game one added to the marathon as it went a UMC record 12 innings with the Wolves taking the game 2-1 in the bottom of the twelfth inning. Game two was decided by one run as well as NSU shut out UMC 1-0 in the night cap.
Sarena Diederichs (C, 5-8, Sr, St. Cloud, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles at the dish going 4-8 (.500) with one double and a .625 slugging percentage. She also caught all 18.5 innings.
Rachel Schoenborn (2B, 5-4, Fr, Anchorage, Alaska) and
Stacey Marcum (P, 5-7, So, Merrill, Wis.) each added two hits for UMC.
Steph Thomas (P, 5-9, Sr, St. Albert, Alberta) threw an amazing game one going 11 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out seven Wolves. Marcum threw outstanding as well in game two, going six inning and giving up one run (none earned).
The Golden Eagles host Concordia- St. Paul and St. Cloud State this Saturday and Sunday. Game times are scheduled for noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. UMC closes out the 2011 season on Monday at the University of Mary. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
