Inside Athletic Training

Athletic trainers at the University of Minnesota Crookston collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide care for student athletes. Athletic training focuses on the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions. Treatment of said injuries use a variety of evidence-based modalities and rehabilitation techniques. All athletic trainers at Crookston are nationally certified and licensed in the state of Minnesota.

Location and hours:

The athletic training room is located in Sports Center Room 153. It is attached to the men’s cross country/baseball locker room and the women’s cross country/softball/soccer/volleyball locker room. The athletic training room is open Monday – Friday, 9–5 or until the last practice of the day has concluded. Holidays and weekends are based around practice schedules.

Student Athlete Information

General Information
Student-athletes should immediately report all injuries and illness to the Athletic Training staff. All athletes must be “Medically Cleared” before returning to any activity if he/she is referred for medical care or misses practice and/or games. Clearance for practice and games is at the discretion of the athletic training staff, not the coaches.

Athletes are strongly encouraged to obtain a referral from the UMC Athletic Training staff for medical services. This allows the athlete to receive care from an appropriate providers, and allows the Athletic Training staff to be promptly and properly informed of the care provided in order to carry out physician’s order regarding appropriate continued care & return to activity. Following a doctor appointment, the athlete must provide the Athletic Training staff with the completed & signed UMC Athletic Training “Physician Referral” form before the athlete is allowed to return to activity and / or modify his/her activity from a prior order.

Student-athlete may be referred to physicians other than UMC Team Physicians on an as needed basis; however, the team physician has the final decision on an athlete’s playing status regardless of the opinion of outside physicians.

UMC Athletic Trainers have a close relationship with the UMC Student Health Services. For acute illness and other health concerns, student-athletes are encouraged to take advantage of the student health (218-281-8512). There is no charge to visit the nurse, Stacey Grunewald. However, if a referral is made to a health care professional off campus, the costs are the student’s responsibility and/or their insurance provider.

Sports Related-Concussion

*Report to Athletic Trainers Immediately.*
If you suspect that you or your teammates have a concussion.

Symptoms of a Concussion

  • Symptoms can show up hours or days after the original injury.
  • Symptoms include:
    • Ringing in the ears
    • Amnesia (Memory Loss)
    • Confusion
    • Headache
    • Loss of consciousness (Knocked out)
    • Balance problem or dizziness
    • Double or fuzzy vision
    • Sensitivity to light or noise
    • Nausea (Feeling that you might throw-up)
    • Feeling sluggish, foggy, or groggy
    • Feeling unusually irritable
    • Difficulty to remember or concentrate
    • Feeling slow

What to do when you think you or your teammate have a concussion?

  1. DON’T HIDE IT: Tell your athletic trainer and coach immediately. Never ignore or underestimate a blow to the head.
  2. REPORT IT: Do not return to play in a game, practice or other physical activity while symptoms are still present. The sooner you get evaluated by athletic trainers and/or physicians, the sooner you may be able to return to play.
  3. GET CHECKED-OUT: Only physicians and athletic trainers can tell you if you have had a concussion and when it is safe for you to return to play. Coaches don’t make this decision because they are not trained to do it. *Concussion may affect your ability to perform daily-living activities, your reaction time, balance, sleep and classroom performance. UMC sports medicine team and faculty members collaborate to ensure student-athletes’ safety and support their classroom activity after having concussion.
  4. TAKE TIME TO RECOVER: Your brain needs time to heal so get some rest. In rare cases, repeat concussions can damage your brain permanently, and even cause death. Severe brain injury can change your whole life.

Treatment
UMC Athletic Trainers work closely with our team physicians to treat concussion. Treatment periods vary based on severity and student-athletes’ reaction to treatment.

ImPACT Test
The UMC sports medicine team use ImPACT test (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) to evaluate concussions. This assessment test assists the UMC sports medicine team to objectively evaluate the concussed student-athlete’s post-injury condition and to determine if the student-athletes are fully recovered from the concussion and ready to return to activity.

ImPACT Test is being used in variety clinical settings and professions including:
NFL (National Football League) – 24 teams
NHL (National Hockey League) – All teams
MLB (Major League Baseball) – All teams
NBA (National Basketball Association) – 7 teams
Olympic Sports – USA Boxing, USA Hockey, US Soccer etc

This test measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:

  • Attention span
  • Working memory
  • Sustained and selective attention time
  • Response variability
  • Non-verbal problem solving
  • Reaction time
