Hammond, Ind. - Golden Eagle Hockey will officially play the University of Wisconsin Badgers tomorrow, with the winner going to Nationals. The Golden Eagles got here thanks to a 3-1 win over Sault College earlier in the day, as the University of Wisconsin wrapped up their game right around 10:30 p.m. in a 4-3 overtime win over Marian University.
The Golden Eagles and Badgers have played once this year, and it was just two weeks ago for third place at the WCCHA Tournament. The Golden Eagles won that game 6-3. These two programs have played each other just five times, with the Golden Eagles holding the advantage at 3-2. The Golden Eagles won the first two games of this matchup and have now won the most recent. In those five games, the Golden Eagles have scored 14 goals for an average of 2.8 goals per game. They have allowed 12 goals for 2.4 goals against per game.
The Golden Eagle Player to Watch is none other than the captain, Logan Syrup (5th, F, Park River, N.D.) who always seems to come up big in the biggest moments for this team. Last year, in this same tournament, Syrup led the region in points with eight points in three games, which came by way of three goals and five assists. That performance included arguably the most clutch goal in program history, as he forced overtime with a goal with just 28 seconds on the clock against Maryville University. Syrup is also the highest scorer in program history with 207 points in 146 games.
The Golden Eagles and Badgers are set for puck drop tomorrow at 2 p.m. with both teams hunting for a trip to Nationals in St. Louis, Missouri in just three weeks. For the Golden Eagles, it would be their first trip in program history.
