Crookston, Minn. - Golden Eagle Hockey wrapped up their weekend series with Lake Region State College with a 4-2 win. The Golden Eagles are now 2-0-0 as they prepare to play North Dakota State University. In net for the Golden Eagles today, and making his season debut was #35 Tyler Swanson (Jr., G, Moorhead, Minn.) and for the Royals it was Carson Cronquist.
It took a while for things to get going in the first period of today's game, but the Golden Eagles were the first on the scoreboard thanks to Walker McGillis (Fr., F, Mayville, N.D.) scoring his first career goal. Tyler Lorenz (Jr., D, Shakopee, Minn.) had the primary assist and Anthony Launderville (Fr., F, Duluth, Minn.) had the secondary assist. Just three minutes later, another first career goal as Anthony Laundreville scored his first career goal, which was assisted by Anthony Foster (Sr., F, Warroad, Minn.) and Mason Romfo (Jr., F, Langdon, N.D.) for the 2-0 lead. Thanks to Swanson's nine saves on nine shots against, the Golden Eagles carried that 2-0 lead into the second period.
The Golden Eagles did not take long to extend the lead to 3-0 as Braden Van de Kraats (Jr., F, Medicine Hat, Alberta) scored his second goal of the weekend, assisted by Tyler Lorenz. That assist put Lorenz up to a goal and three assists for the opening weekend. The second period was all goalies following the early goal, with Swanson stopping all six shots he faced and Cronquist turning aside 14 of the 15 he faced.
The third period saw yet another quick goal from the Golden Eagles when Anthony Foster took the puck from a Royals defender and did it all on his own to put the Golden Eagles ahead 4-0 just two and a half minutes into the final 20. It took a while, but with four minutes remaining, Ty Rogers broke through for the first Lake Region goal of the afternoon. That was shortly followed by another Ty Rogers goal, and the lead was cut in half. The Golden Eagles locked in and shut down the Royals for the remainder of the period however, and came away with the 4-2 win. Swanson finished the day with 23 saves on 25 shots and the win.
The Golden Eagles now will head to Fargo next weekend to take on the North Dakota State University Bison. Game one of that series will take place Friday, October 16th at 7 p.m. while game two will be on Saturday, October 17th at 12 p.m.
