Bemidji, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston softball split with their Highway-2 rivals on Wednesday morning into the afternoon, taking game one by a pair, 4-2, before falling to BSU in five innings, 9-1.
Minnesota Crookston improves to 15-26 (3-11 NSIC).
Game One
The first three innings of the early morning game would see no scoring, as neither the Golden Eagles nor Beavers could breakthrough.
The breakthrough would come in the fourth for the Golden Eagles.
Bryanna Decker (Fr., C/OF, Roseville, Calif.) would hit a triple on a line drive into the left field corner, scoring a pair in
Irelyn Spencer (R-So., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) and
Rayna French (So., C/OF, La Salle, Manitoba).
Trailing 2-0, BSU would answer with a run in the fourth.
Minnesota Crookston would answer right back in the fifth. They would load the bases with nobody out and would score a run on an
Emilee Haggadone (Jr., C, Lincoln, Neb.) RBI groundout to the first baseman.
Once again, BSU would answer again and make it a one run game in the bottom on the sixth.
Minnesota Crookston would get that all-so-important insurance run, as French would single in
Chayse Doering (Fr., OF, Shakopee, Minn.), giving the Golden Eagles a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
BSU would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
The win for the maroon and gold would be catapulted by
Whitnee Curry (Sr., IF, Lincoln, Neb.) and Doering, who each finished with two hits. Minnesota Crookston had seven hits on the day.
Alexa Guilford (Jr., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) was spectacular in the circle, going the distance, giving up just two earned runs, while giving up six hits. It's the first complete game in Guilford's career.
Game Two
Game two wouldn't go the Golden Eagles way.
BSU would score a run in the second and would explode for four runs in the third, taking a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth.
The Golden Eagles would answer with a run in the fourth, as
Gabrielle Gomez (Fr., P/1B, Lakewood, Calif.) would single in Decker. The one run would be the lone run in the inning for the maroon and gold.
BSU would score one in the fourth and three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, earning the eight run win in five innings.
Curry added two more hits on the day, finishing 4-7 in the two games against the Beavers. Minnesota Crookston finished with seven hits in the game and left five runners on base.
Delaney Penner (Fr., P, Winkler, Manitoba) fell to 5-5 on the year after giving up four earned runs on six hits, in 2.1 innings of work.
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston will head back on the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders with Augustana and Wayne State College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
