Winona, Minn. – After falling in game one to Winona State, Minnesota Crookston scored two runs in the fifth inning in game two, while also using a
Delaney Penner (Fr., P, Winkler, Manitoba) gem in game two to defeat the Warriors, 2-1, splitting the day.
Minnesota Crookston moves to 14-25 (2-10 NSIC).
Game One
Game one would be all Warriors.
WSU would outscore the Golden Eagles 11-0, earning the game one win.
Jayda Berg was outstanding for the Warriors, throwing a no-hitter in the game.
Riley Blake (Fr., P/OF, Las Vegas, Nev.) earned the start, giving up three earned runs.
Sydney McMurdie (Fr., P/UT, Twin Falls, Idaho) and
Gabrielle Gomez (Fr., P/1B, Lakewood, Calif.) also pitched in relief.
Game Two
The second game of the twin bill would be the exact polar opposite than game one.
Both pitchers were outstanding through four, but Penner would finally give up a run, as the Warriors would score on a single.
The Golden Eagles would answer right away, using some small ball to do it. Blake would score on a passed ball in the fifth, also allowing
Whitnee Curry (Sr., IF, Lincoln, Neb.) to advance to third. Curry would score on a bunt single by
Rayna French (So., C/OF, La Salle, Manitoba), giving the Golden Eagles their first lead of the day.
As it turns out, those two runs would be enough for the Golden Eagles to knock off the NSIC contender and perennial power, 2-1.
Minnesota Crookston finished with four hits, led by French and her two hits.
Emilee Haggadone (Jr., UT, Lincoln, Neb.) and
Irelyn Spencer (R-So., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) had the other two.
The story of the day was the freshman in the circle. Penner earned her fifth win of the season, going 6.2 innings of work, giving up just one unearned run, while striking out a career high seven.
Evie Stuck (Sr., P, Papillion, Neb.) picked up the save, getting the all-important final out, striking out the final hitter with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.
