Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a mid-week sweep in the First City on the Mississippi with 24-3 and 7-4 victories over Bemidji State Wednesday, April 16.
The Golden Eagles improved to 18-19 (15-12 NSIC) with Wednesday's wins. Minnesota Crookston has won four-straight games. Bemidji State dropped to 4-30 (3-24 NSIC) with the losses. Minnesota Crookston has won 21-straight games in the series, with their last loss coming April 11, 2017. The Golden Eagles remain in seventh in the NSIC standings.
Game One
The Golden Eagles charged to an impressive 24-3 victory over the Beavers in the first game, coming one run short of their school record of 25 runs set in 2015 against Clearwater Christian University. They had scored 23 runs three times, most recently in 2023 against Bemidji State.
Minnesota Crookston notched 24 runs on 13 hits, while they also walked 12 times, and the Beavers committed six errors. Josh Dykhoff (Jr., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) guided the U of M Crookston, hitting 3-of-4, with six RBI, and and three runs scored. Aaron Wensloff (So., IF/OF, Roseau, Minn.) was 3-of-6, with four RBI, and three runs scored. Sawyer Satrom (Sr., IF, Portland, N.D.) finished 2-of-3, with five runs scored, while Dylan Debilzen (Fr., OF, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) finished 1-of-3, with five runs scored, and an RBI.
Bemidji-natives Landon Hanson (Fr.) and Cam Justice (R-Fr.), got the opportunity to play in their hometown in the first game.
Isaac Wensloff (Jr., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) picked up his third win of the season, toeing the mound for five innings. He allowed six hits, striking out four, and walking zero. Jake Jaroszewski (Fr., LHP, Fargo, N.D.) allowed an unearned run in one frame, while Kayden Camacho (Fr., RHP, Glyndon, Minn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
The loss was handed to Matt Filippi, who allowed seven earned runs in 2.1 innings, with one strikeout, and five walks.
Minnesota Crookston opened the scoring in the first with an RBI groundout by Dykhoff, scoring Debilzen. Later in the frame, Aaron Wensloff reached on an errant throw, bringing in Satrom. A Danny Wensloff (R-Sr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) triple to right center cleared the bases, scoring Aaron Wensloff, Kobe Senn (Sr., IF, Fargo, N.D.), and Brock Larsen (R-Jr., C/1B, Blaine, Minn.) to extend the advantage to 5-0.
In the bottom of the first, Noah Drusch doubled in Zach Evenson to cut the deficit to 5-1. Filippi singled to left field, plating Drusch to trim the score to 5-2.
The U of M Crookston chipped in four more runs in the second. A Dykhoff double scored Debilzen to make it 6-2. Americo Sculati (R-Jr., OF, Golden Valley, Minn.) grounded out to push the lead to 7-2, bringing in Satrom. Senn then singled in Dykhoff, followed by Larsen scoring on an error to length the advantage to 9-2
Minnesota Crookston pushed in four more runs in the third. Dykhoff hit his team-leading 12th home run, scoring himself, Satrom, and Debilzen. Dykhoff has hit six home runs in the last 10 days. Aaron Wensloff followed suit with a four-bagger, his fifth of the year, making it 13-2.
The Golden Eagles had an 11-run inning in the fourth frame. Dykhoff led off the tallies with a single to plate Debilzen. An Aaron Wensloff double brought in Dykhoff, and Satrom to widen the gap to 16-2. Sculati came in on a wild pitch to make it 17-2. The scoring continued when Danny Wensloff walked with the bases loaded, bringing Aaron Wensloff. A Kyler Miller (Fr., IF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) sacrifice fly plated Larsen to extend it to 19-2. Debilzen reached on an error, bringing in Senn. Satrom then singled, with Danny Wensloff scoring on an error to make it 21-2. Debilzen crossed the plate on a balk to widen the gap to 22-2. A Landon Hanson groundout scored Satrom to extend it to 23-2. Aaron Wensloff rounded out the big scoring inning with a single, bringing in Sculati.
Bemidji State scored one in the sixth with an Adrian Falcon single to plate Filippi, but it would not be enough to overcome the sizable deficit.
Game Two
Minnesota Crookston overcame an early 3-0 deficit to pick up a 7-4 win and secure the sweep in Bemidji Wednesday.
Max Weber (Sr., RHP, St. Paul, Minn.) started and tossed three innings, allowing three runs on four hits in the no-decision. Isaac Roers (R-Jr., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) came on to pick up the win, his fourth of the season, allowing no runs in four innings. He struck out six, and walked just one. Caden Edwards (R-Sr., LHP, Duluth, Minn.) allowed one run in one stanza. Nate Grafsgaard (R-Sr., RHP, Devils Lake, N.D.) picked up his team-high seventh save shutting down the Beavers in the ninth. He is now alone in fifth for single-season saves, the record is 13 by Dalton Grose in 2019.
The loss went to Beau Barry, who allowed just one earned run in three innings.
Sculati propelled Minnesota Crookston in game two, going 2-of-4, with two RBI, and two runs scored. Satrom was 2-of-5, with a run scored. Debilzen went 2-of-5, with one run accounted for, while Larsen,was 1-of-4, with an RBI, and a run scored.
BSU jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the first. A Drusch double to right field scored Evenson, and Beau Thoma to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Filippi then singled in Drusch to augment the BSU advantage.
Minnesota Crookston took over the lead in the fifth. Satrom singled, bringing around Kyler Miller, while Debilzen crossed on a throwing error to cut the lead to 3-2. Satrom scored when Dykhoff reached on an error to knot it 3-3. A Sculati home run, his sixth of the season and first since March 15, pushed in himself, and Dykhoff to boost the lead to 5-3.
In the eighth, Sculati came across the plate on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. A Larsen solo shot, his fourth four-bagger of the year, pushed the advantage to 7-3.
Dylan Hedley hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to trim the Golden Eagle lead to 7-4. Grafsgaard retired the first two batters in order in the ninth, but a Hunter Hyden single gave them hope. Drusch moved Hyden to second with a walk to give the Beavers two on with two outs and the game-tying run at the plate. Grafsgaard got Filippi to fly out to preserve the 7-4 win.
Minnesota Crookston has an important home series Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19 as they welcome in league-leading Minnesota State University, currently ranked eighth nationally.
