St. Cloud, Minn. – It was the first midweek conference doubleheader of the season for Golden Eagle softball, who hit the road to do battle with St. Cloud State, inside the Husky Dome.
In game one, SCSU scored three second inning runs and scored runs in all but two innings, defeating Minnesota Crookston, 8-3.
SCSU would sweep Minnesota Crookston on the day, dropping the Golden Eagles to 13-20 on the season.
Game One
Delaney Penner (Fr., P, Winkler, Manitoba) earned the start and saw the Huskies score three runs in the second inning, jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
SCSU would score a pair in the fourth, taking a 5-0 lead into the late innings.
Minnesota Crookston would get on the board in the fifth, as
Haley Koch (Sr., C, Mondamin, Iowa) would drive in
Bryanna Decker (Fr., C/OF, Roseville, Calif.) on a sacrifice fly to right field.
St. Cloud State would eventually take a seven run lead heading into the final inning.
Minnesota Crookston would try to chip away in the seventh.
Whitnee Curry (Sr., IF, Lincoln, Neb.) singled to center field, scoring
Hannah Trzinski (Fr., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.). Koch would continue her solid day at the plate, lacing a double to right centerfield, scoring
Sophie Juntunen (Jr., 1B, St. Michael, Minn.), cutting the lead to 8-3, which would be the final score.
Minnesota Crookston did finish with five hits in the game, led by Curry, who was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with an RBI. Koch drove in a pair of runs and collected a hit.
Penner fell to 4-2 on the year after giving up four earned runs on four hits, through three innings of work.
Evie Stuck (Sr., P, Papillion, Neb.) came in for relief of Penner and gave up three earned runs on five hits, also in three innings of work.
Game Two
Game two would be all Huskies.
SCSU would strike for seven first inning runs and would add another fifth inning run, beating Minnesota Crookston in five innings, 8-0.
Minnesota Crookston had three hits, one apiece from
Chayse Doering (Fr., OF, Shakopee, Minn.),
Madisen Yandle (Fr., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) and
Jocelyn Hernandez (Fr., OF, Tracy, Calif.). Minnesota Crookston left five runners on base.
Riley Blake (Fr., P/OF, Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up the loss in the circle. Stuck and
Alexa Guilford (Jr., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) pitched in relief.
