Viera, Fla. – Freshmen
Sydney McMurdie (Fr., P/UT, Twin Falls, Idaho) and
Delaney Penner (Fr., P/OF, Winkler, Manitoba) were outstanding in the circle all day long, propelling the Golden Eagles to a sweep in Florida. The Golden Eagles mercy-ruled Ursuline, 11-0 and won a low scoring affair, 3-1, over Thomas More.
Minnesota Crookston moves to 9-12 on the season and have six more games in Florida.
Game One
Game one was all about the maroon and gold. The Golden Eagles would strike for four runs in the top of the first, including a pair of sacrifice flies from
Riley Blake (Fr., P/OF, Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Whitnee Curry (Sr., IF, Lincoln, Neb.).
The runs would keep coming in the third inning, as the Golden Eagles would add three more runs, including a sac fly from
Bryanna Decker (Fr., C/OF, Roseville, Calif.).
Hannah Trzinski (Fr., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.) would collect one of her three hits in the game, helping the Golden Eagles to another three-run inning, this time with a two RBI double.
That would be more than enough for McMurdie, who would allow just a single hit in the first shutout of her career.
Minnesota Crookston pounded out 10 hits in the game, led by Trzinski and her three hits. Blake and
Madisen Yandle (Fr., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) each added two hits.
Trzinski and Blake combined for five runs batted in.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles would strike first once again in the bottom of the first, as Trzinski would drive in another run on a groundout.
The Saints would answer right back with a run of their own, but Decker would collect her first career triple and drive in Curry for a 2-1 lead.
That 2-1 lead would hold up. In fact, the Golden Eagles would add another run in the fourth, as
Chayse Doering (Fr., OF, Shakopee, Minn.) would drive in a run with an RBI double.
That two run lead would be more than enough for Penner, who was fantastic for the second straight outing, going the distance, while giving up just one earned run and striking out four.
Curry, Decker and
Rayna French (So., C, La Salle, Manitoba) led the offensive charge, as they combined for six of the eight Golden Eagle hits.
What's Next
Winners of four of their last six games, the Golden Eagles have an off day on Thursday and then are back in action on Friday for another doubleheader against Saint Anselm and New Haven.
