Minnesota Crookston Equestrian Heads Down I-29 for Pair of Meets at South Dakota State

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston equestrian team is set to compete in a pair of meets in Brookings, S.D., Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4 at DeHaan Equestrian Center. The Golden Eagles will face South Dakota State University Friday at 9 a.m., and will begin their meet with the University of Tennessee Martin Friday at 2:10 p.m., and commence the match Saturday.

Minnesota Crookston comes in with an 0-2 mark, but had a strong first week against Delaware State University, and the University of the South (Sewanee). The Golden Eagles tied Sewanee 5-5, but fell on raw points 746-703. The Golden Eagles earned the Fences point against Sewanee. Against Delaware State, Emma Mutnansky (So., Cass Lake, Minn.) was named the Horsemanship MOP, which led to a ECAC Rider of the Week honor. She helped the Golden Eagles pick up the Horsemanship point 3-2 against the Hornets. 

The Golden Eagles had several newcomers stand out in their first week of collegiate riding. Maggie Lawler (Fr., Algonquin, Ill.) picked up a victory in Fences over Sewanee. Julianne Lurie (Fr., Seminole, Fla.) also earned a Fences win over Sewanee. In the Flat, Ryann Mitchell (Fr., Camano Island, Wash.) had a 78 in a victory over Sewanee, while Lawler put up the second-highest Equitation on the Flat score in program history with an 85. In the Delaware State meet, McKenna Hooyer (Jr., Rock Rapids, Iowa), a South Dakota State transfer, earned a 74-72 win in Horsemanship. Lurie also earned a Fences win against Delaware State.

Minnesota Crookston also had returners stand out against Delaware State and Sewanee. Mutnansky had a career-high 77 points versus the Hornets in order to take her first career MOP accolade. Siara Mosby (So., Bremerton, Wash.) picked up a Horsemanship win against Delaware State. Belle Syrett (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned a commanding Fences victory versus the University of the South. Brooke Hoven (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) made her NCEA debut and earned a victory over Delaware State.

South Dakota State makes their season debut this weekend. They went 4-9 in 2024-25, including facing the Golden Eagles three times. Minnesota Crookston's best performance came at the ECAC Championship falling narrowly 11-9. The Jackrabbits return Hannah Dutton, who was All-Tournament for Horsemanship at the ECAC Championship in 2025. Julianna Gullo, who began her career with the Golden Eagles, returns for South Dakota State after earning All-Tournament for the Flat and Fences in 2025. 

UT Martin comes in ranked No. 10 in the nation. They are coming off the 2025 ECAC Championship. The Skyhawks also open the season this weekend. They posted an 8-7 mark in 2024-25. Minnesota Crookston fell 13-6 to UT Martin last season. Ava Newsom returns for the Skyhawks after earning All-Tournament MOP in Horsemanship. Kate Milles returns after receiving All-Tournament MOP in Fences at the ECAC Championship.
