Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Mankato, Minn. – After knocking off Winona State in game two last night for the first time in more than a decade, the Golden Eagles were back at it for a doubleheader with another NSIC power, Minnesota State.
In game one, the Golden Eagles finished with a season-high 15 hits and had a lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mavericks would walk-off the Golden Eagles, 9-8.
Game two would see less offense, but the Mavericks would score early and hold on for a 5-3 win in game two, picking up the sweep over the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 9-28 (2-10 NSIC).
Game One
The Golden Eagles would start fast in game one, as
Haley Koch (Jr., C, Mondamin, Iowa) would score a pair on an error by the Mavericks right fielder.
Rayna French (Fr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) and
Paige Shwaluk (Sr., MIF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) would each come across to score.
From that point on, the Mavs would regain control and score five straight runs, highlighted by a three run first inning and a two run fourth inning.
Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, the Golden Eagles would use a ton of two-out magic. Koch would get the big inning started with a two-run blast over the centerfield fence, cutting into the deficit by a run.
Sophie Juntunen (So., 1B, St. Michael, Minn.) would restart the rally with a single through the left side and she would later come around to score on a
Reagan Emerick (R-Jr., MIF, Macomb, Ill.) RBI single. Later, a wild pitch would allow
Ruth Freiberg (So., OF, Hopkins, Minn.) to score, as would Emerick, giving the Golden Eagles a 7-5 lead.
Whitnee Curry (Jr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) would cap off the six run inning with an RBI single, scoring
Maddie Shwaluk (Sr., OF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba).
Trailing 8-5, MSU would score a pair in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-7, in favor of the maroon and gold.
Both teams would not score in the sixth inning, so it would be a one run lead for the Golden Eagles heading into the seventh.
The Golden Eagles would look for some insurance runs in the top half of the inning, but would leave the juices full without a run.
MSU would get some traffic on the base paths in the seventh and would walk off the Golden Eagles for the 9-8 win.
Minnesota Crookston had a season-high 15 hits and had five hitters have multi-hit games, led by the eight and nine hitters, Emerick and
Maddie Shwaluk, who each had three hits.
Paige Shwaluk finished with two hits, her ninth multi-hit game of the season. Curry and French each added a pair of hits, as well. The Golden Eagles left 10 runners on base in the game.
Alexa Guilford (So., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) earned her fourth start of the season and gave up seven runs, all of which were earned, on 11 hits in five innings of work.
Thayda Houser (Sr., P, Seymour, Iowa) worked an inning and a third in relief, falling to 3-9 on the season, after giving up two earned runs on three hits.
Game Two
Game two would see a similar trend to game one, as the Golden Eagles would score a run on an RBI single from French with two outs.
The Mavs would answer with a run of their own to knot things up at a run apiece.
The Mavericks would score a run in the second inning and a pair in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Emerick would get the Golden Eagles a run back in the top of the fourth, as she would single in
Shaelyn Grant (Sr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) to cut the MSU lead in half.
The Mavericks would answer with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to regain their three-run lead at 5-2.
Juntunen would single in French in the top of the fifth inning to trail by two once again.
The 5-3 lead would be enough for the Mavericks, as that would be the final, as MSU was able to sweep the Golden Eagles.
Ho-hum, just another two hit game for
Paige Shwaluk, going 2-4 with a run scored in the game. Juntunen also went 2-3 in the game. The Golden Eagles finished with eight hits, but left seven runners on base.
Evie Stuck (Jr., P, Papillion, Neb.) will pick up the loss in the game, after giving up five earned runs in three innings of work.
Kailee Pollard (Jr., P, Marshalltown, Iowa) pitched for the second straight day in relief and went 2.1 innings of work on the day.
