Minnesota Crookston Fights Hard in Three-Set Loss to No. 6 Wayne State College

Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston showed peskiness and fight against No. 6 Wayne State College on Friday night at home, but the Wildcats defeated the Golden Eagles in straight sets (14-25, 18-25, 18-25).
 
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-9 (0-4 NSIC).
 
Set One
The opening set would be all Wildcats, who would jump out to a fast start, taking a 10-1 lead.
 
A pair of kills from Madison Carsten (So., OH, Wadena, Minn.) and Maya Jones (So., OH, New Braunfels, Texas) would make it 10-3.
 
The Golden Eagles would trail 15-6, but Jones and Carizma Muth (R-Fr., OH, Randolph, Wis.) would cut the lead to seven with a pair of kills.
 
Later on in the set, a Carsten kill would make it 20-14, but five straight points from the Wildcats would give them the 11 point win in the first set.
 
Set Two
It would be another fast start for the Golden Eagles, but Minnesota Crookston would halt the momentum and score three straight points, with two kills from Jones and a service ace from Muth.
 
An Emma Malek (So., MH, Plainfield, Ill.) service ace would cut the Wildcat lead to just one at 7-6.
 
The Golden Eagles would stay in the set and would trail 14-11, following a Baily Teveldal (Fr., S, Baltic, S.D.) service ace.
 
The Golden Eagles would stay within reach in the set, but WSC would be a tad too much, winning the middle set by seven.
 
Set Three
Once again, WSC would start fast, racing their way to a 9-2 lead, but the run would be halted momentarily with a kill from Jones.
 
WSC would continue to try and stretch their lead and would take a 21-12 lead following a Golden Eagle error, but two kills from Malek and another ace from Teveldal would make it 21-15.
 
The Golden Eagles would have one last gasp and would go on another 3-0 run, making it 23-18, but the Wildcats would score the final two points of the set, earning the sweep.
 
Individual Stats
Jones was fantastic, finishing with 12 kills on 24 total attacks, good for a .333 attacking percentage. Carsten finished with eight kills, while Malek added six. Lexi Scharold (Fr., MH, Alexandria, Kent.) added four kills, while Teveldal added three kills, one behind her career best.
 
Teveldal added 32 assists, while Carsten and Kailee Waasdorp (So., DS/Lib., West Fargo, N.D.) each added 10 digs.
 
The Golden Eagles added six service aces on the night, continuing their streak of at least one in every match this season.
 
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston will look to split the weekend tomorrow afternoon, as they welcome in the Vikings of Augustana. First serve is set for 2 P.M.
