BURNSVILLE, Minn. - University of Minnesota Crookston tennis coach Josh Lunak was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year as released Tuesday, May 16 by the conference office. In addition, Madeleine Schneider (Jr., Gartringen, Germany) was selected All-NSIC First Team for singles.
Lunak is the first Golden Eagle coach in any sport since Mike Roysland of women's basketball following the 2014-15 season to earn NSIC Coach of the Year accolades. Jason Tangquist of men's golf (2002) and Mike Curfman of women's basketball (2001-02) are the other Minnesota Crookston coaches to receive NSIC Coach of the Year honors during the NCAA Division II era.
Lunak has helped usher a major turnaround at Minnesota Crookston. The Golden Eagles did not win a single dual match for seven years (2015-21). This season, the Minnesota Crookston head coach helped the Golden Eagles to a school-record seven wins and their first NSIC wins since 2014 with victories over Bemidji State University and Upper Iowa University. In addition, Lunak aided Schneider to a school-record mark in singles wins. Lunak is in his second stint as head coach. He took over prior to the 2022 season after leading the ship from 2007-13.
Schneider is the first Golden Eagles since Catherine Brown to earn All-NSIC accolades. Brown was named All-NSIC Honorable Mention in 2016. Brown and Schneider are the only two to earn All-NSIC honors in the program's history. Schneider is the first Minnesota Crookston tennis player to ever earn All-NSIC First Team honors. She went 14-3 at No. 1 singles to help Minnesota Crookston to a program-best 7-10 mark. Schneider has the career record for No. 1 singles wins and the single-season mark for singles wins.
