Minnesota Crookston Softball Falls 13-0 to Fort Hays State

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team allowed big innings in the top of the second and top of the third to Fort Hays State University as they fell 13-0. The game opened the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kan., for the Golden Eagles.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 2-5 with the loss Friday, February 24. The Tigers improved to 4-5 with the victory. Friday's game was run-ruled after five frames.

Charlotte Dombrowski (Fr., RHP, Valparaiso, Ind.) started and went 1-2 with the loss. She allowed five earned runs, on five hits. Dombrowski walked four and had no strikeouts. Evie Stuck (So., RHP, Papillion, Neb.) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Golden Eagles.

Emma Montoya got the win for the Tigers. She went five innings, pitching the shutout, with 10 strikeouts, and just two walks.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Paige Shwaluk (Jr., IF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba), who went 1-of-2. Dana Zarn (Sr., IF, Winnipeg, Manitoba) went 1-of-1, with a double.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Peyton Shepard scored on a wild pitch.

Fort Hays State padded their lead in the bottom of the second with six runs. The Tigers opened their scoring when Regan Curry scored on a passed ball. In the next at-bat, Shepard doubled down the line to plate Lexi Mohr and Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson to extend the lead to 4-0. Fort Hays State pushed their advantage to 5-0 with a Madison Pierce single up the middle to score Sarah Tiffany. The tally went to 6-0 when Loren Beggs scored after Aubrey Martinez reached on a fielding error. Fort Hays State capped off the scoring rally as Pierce scored on a Mohr walk with the bases loaded.

The Tigers added six more runs in the bottom of the third. Shepard came home to score when Carly Stuke was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the next at-bat, Martinez singled up the middle to bring in Beggs and Tiffany to extend the lead to 10-0. Curry then hit an infield single to drive in Stuke to push the advantage to 11-0. The Tigers capped off the scoring run with a Ramirez-Johnson single to bring in Curry and Martinez and make it 13-0.

Minnesota Crookston will return to the field to face Newman University Saturday, February 25 at 11:30 a.m., at the Lake Shawnee North Complex. They will wrap up Saturday at Washburn University at 3:30 p.m.
