WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team continued their historic start to the 2023 season with a 6-1 win over Upper Iowa University at Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn. The Golden Eagles picked up their second conference win of 2023, matching their mark from 2013. UMN Crookston surpassed their program-high for wins as they improved to 5-2 (2-1 NSIC). Upper Iowa dropped to 0-3 with the loss.
The Golden Eagles opened the day by taking the doubles point.
Kavya Singh (So., Agra, India) and
Blaike Zander (So., Bismarck, N.D.) picked up a 7-6 victory over Rafaela Queiroga Tavares and Johanne Valle. At No. 3 doubles,
Kaydance Hinn (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Tasha Achermann (Sr., Motley, Minn.) won by default. At the No. 2 slot,
Madeleine Schneider (Jr., Gartringen, Germany) and
Sarah Velasquez (Sr., Chino, Calif.) fell 6-4 to Elaina Wall and Varvara Ogorodnikova.
In singles, Zander battled back from a set down against Queiroga Tavares to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. At the No. 3 spot, Singh defeated Valle, 6-3, 7-6. At No. 4 singles,
Michelle Swyter (Sr., Perham, Minn.) earned the 6-4, 6-1 win over Wall. At the No. 5 slot, Velasquez dominated Katie O'Brien, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 6 spot,
Ashley Chomyn (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) won by default. At No. 1 singles, Schneider suffered her first loss of the season to Ogorodnikova, falling 6-4, 7-5. Schneider is 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action March 10 against Baldwin Wallace University in Orlando, Fla.
