GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Kavya Singh (Sr., Agra, India) won a highly-contested three-set match against Laia Vallespi, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, coming back from down 1-0 to deliver a 4-3 win over the University of Jamestown Friday, March 27 at Choice Health and Fitness. The match came down to No. 5 singles and No. 3 singles, with Singh winning and Mariia Sharandachenko winning by retirement over Nadia Cases Mundet (Jr., Barcelona, Spain).
Minnesota Crookston improved to 7-8 (4-3 NSIC), winning four straight. The Golden Eagles improved to fourth in the NSIC standings, and broke a tiebreaker with the Jimmies, as Jamestown dropped to 3-5 (3-4 NSIC) with Friday's loss.
The Golden Eagles set the tone early by winning the doubles point. Asli Oktay (So., Istanbul, Turkey) and Abril Manas Hernandez (So., Barcelona, Spain) earned a 6-2 win over Sydney Friesen and Vallespi. It was the first doubles win for Oktay and Manas Hernandez as a pair. Singh and Cases Mundet upended Mariia Sharandachenko and Anna Sharandachenko, 6-2. The pair is 8-3 in doubles this season. Daniela de Lucas Rivera (Jr., Madrid, Spain) and Terez Drasilova (Fr., Naples, Fla.) fell 6-2 to Bodil van Zeijl and Julie van Zeijl.
In singles, Minnesota Crookston earned a 6-1, 7-6 victory from Drasilova over Anna Sharandachenko to improve to 5-1 with a victory at No. 4 singles. At No. 6 singles, Manas Hernandez dominated Friesen, 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 5-8. Singh picked up the crucial victory, improving to 7-5. De Lucas Rivera was defeated by Julie van Zeijl, 6-2, 6-3 at th No. 1 spot. At No. 2 singles, Oktay fell 6-4, 6-1 to Bodil van Zeijl. Mariia Sharandachenko earned the win by retirement in three sets over Cases Mundet.
The Golden Eagles will look to continue to make a charge to a NSIC Tournament spot as they host the University of Mary Sunday, March 29 at 3 p.m., in Grand Forks, N.D. The match will be Senior Day for Kavya Singh.
