WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games with a 63-58 victory over Winona State University Friday, January 6 at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn.
Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) secured her seventh-straight double-digit scoring game with a team-high 22 points.
Minnesota Crookston improved to 7-8 (6-3 NSIC) with Friday's win over the Warriors. The Golden Eagles continue their best start to the NSIC schedule since the 2015-16 season. Winona State dropped to 8-7 (2-7 NSIC) with the loss. The Golden Eagles picked up their first win over the Warriors since a 77-63 victory February 19, 2011 in Crookston. UMN Crookston hadn't won in McCown Gymnasium since January 14, 2011.
Miller went 8-of-19 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Bren Fox (R-Sr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) secured her fourth double-double in the past five games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Fox has grabbed double-digit rebounds in the last six tilts.
Alex Page (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) added 13 points.
Erika Lane (So., G, Breezy Point, Minn.) came off the bench for seven points.
The Golden Eagles shot 23-of-60 from the field for 38.3 percent. Minnesota Crookston was 8-of-19 for 42.1 percent. They went 9-of-10 for 90.0 percent from the foul line.
Winona State was 23-of-59 from the field for 39.0 percent. They connected on 10-of-24 from beyond the arc for 41.7 percent. They were just 2-of-4 from the foul line for 50.0 percent, as the charity stripe proved to be a major difference in the game. The Warriors outrebounded the Golden Eagles 31-28.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-2 advantage following a Miller trey. Winona State trimmed the deficit to 12-11 after a Lauren Fech three-pointer going into the quarter break.
UMN Crookston went on a 5-0 run to open the second stanza after baskets from Page and Fox to push the advantage to 17-11. Minnesota Crookston went into the locker room with a 22-15 lead following a Miller jumper.
The Golden Eagles widened their lead to 34-20 with a 12-5 run culminating with a Miller old-fashioned three-point play with 6:08 left in the third quarter. Winona State ended the frame on a 7-0 run as an Ava Sergio bucket cut the UMN Crookston lead to 42-36 going into the break.
Winona State took a 51-50 lead in the fourth quarter after former Golden Eagle Emma Carpenter hit a three-pointer with 3:59 left in the game. The Warriors pushed their lead to 53-50 after a Sergio bucket. Minnesota Crookston fought back as they took the lead back 57-55 after a Miller jumper following a block on the defensive end from
Nicole Hernandez (Jr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.). The Golden Eagles hit their shots on the charity stripe down the stretch to deliver a 63-58 win on the road.
Minnesota Crookston will look to continue their winning ways on the road in Fayette, Iowa Saturday, January 7 at Upper Iowa University at 3:30 p.m.
