Box Score 3 Aberdeen, S.D. – After a wild travel day yesterday, the Golden Eagles played three this afternoon in the Presentation College Dome Classic in Aberdeen. The Golden Eagles day would start early with an 8 A.M. game against Jamestown.
The Jimmies were able to knock off the Golden Eagles for the second straight game, this time defeating the maroon and gold, 7-1.
Much like they would do yesterday, the Golden Eagles would get on the board early, scoring in the top half of the first on a
Shaelyn Grant (So., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) groundout single, scoring
Whitnee Curry (Fr., IF, Lincoln, Neb.).
UJ would answer with two in the second, four in the third and then added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-1, which would be all the Jimmies would need.
Minnesota Crookston finished with seven hits, led by
Sydney Huwe (Fr., UT, Carver, Minn.), who finished with a career-high two hits in the game.
Nicole DeDen (Fr., P, Mission Viejo, Calif.) went the distance in the circle, giving up seven runs, six of which were earned on 12 hits, while striking out one and walking three.
Game Two
Minnesota Crookston would look to bounce back in game number two against Presentation College.
The two teams would be scoreless through the first two innings, but PC would score a run in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
It wouldn't take long for the Golden Eagles to answer.
Alina Avalos (Jr., IF, Riverside, Calif.) would hit her first home run of the season, sending one over the left center field fence to knot things at one.
Presentation would score the next five runs in the middle innings to take a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth.
Minnesota Crookston would score two in the sixth, highlighted by an Avalos double, scoring Curry, cutting the lead to just three at 6-3.
That would be as close as the maroon and gold would get, falling 6-3 to the Saints.
The Golden Eagles collected four hits as a team, highlighted by Avalos' two, while Curry and
Gabriella Blomdahl (Jr., OF, Duliuth, Minn.) each finished with one.
Thayda Houser (So., P/1B, Seymour, Iowa) picked up the loss on the day after going three innings, while giving up four runs on five hits and striking out four.
Game Three
The final game of the day would be all Golden Eagles over Dordt College (Iowa).
The Golden Eagles would strike for four in the bottom of the first inning. Avalos would pick up right where she left off, singling to right field, scoring Blomdahl. Later in the inning,
Emerson Thompson (Fr., 1B/C, Lincoln, Neb.) would hit her first career home run, driving in
Jordan Peterson (R-Sr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.), giving the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Curry would then single to right field, which would also score Peterson, giving the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead.
The Defenders would answer with an Emma Groen two-run home run, cutting the Golden Eagle lead to just three in the top of the fourth inning.
Annjelica Moreno-Engelbrecht (R-Jr., P/UT, Oceanside, Calif.) would give the Golden Eagles an insurance run, singling through the right side, scoring Brittany Mengel (Fr., OF, Sullivan, Wis.) to give the Golden Eagles a 7-2 lead.
Minnesota Crookston would hold off the Defenders to end their four-game losing streak.
The Golden Eagles collected 11 hits in the game, led by Peterson and Moreno-Engelbrecht's two apiece. Thompson led the way with her two RBI day.
In the circle, freshman
Evie Stuck (Fr., P, Papillion, Neb.) was awesome yet again, collecting her third complete game of the season. Stuck struck out a career-high 10 hitters, while walking just three and giving up three runs on six hits.
The Golden Eagles move to .500 on the season at 4-4 and will head back out to Minot next weekend for four games, starting with Minot State next Friday at 5 p.m.
