Bemidji, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team overcame an early 15-point deficit to Bemidji State for their first win of the season on Tuesday night.
Minnesota Crookston improves to 1-4 (1-0 NSIC), while BSU falls to 2-1 (0-1 NSIC).
The win for the Golden Eagles wouldn't be helped by a fast start. Bemidji State would jump out to an early 11-0 lead, before
Janie Tormanen (Fr., F, Menahga, Minn.) would bury a free throw.
Taryn Frazer (Fr., G, Cass Lake, Minn.), who was playing in front of a number of supporters in Bemidji, would score the first three points of her career-high nine points with an old-fashioned three point play.
The Golden Eagles would go on a little 4-0 scamper to end the first quarter down 20-10.
Erika Lane (So., G, Breezy Point, Minn.) would knock down the first of her two three's on the day; the only two makes from behind the arc for the Golden Eagles, to get the lead down to seven early in the second quarter.
Maddie Schires would bury back-to-back three's, including one that seemed to be from Blackduck, forcing a Golden Eagle timeout, down by 15.
Lane would halt the run with five straight points, and
Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) would finish a tough layup, forcing a Beaver timeout.
After a gorgeous full court feed from Miller to
Nicole Hernandez (Jr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.) cut the Beaver lead to seven, BSU would head into to halftime break up nine.
After the halftime break, BSU would extend their lead to 14, but the Golden Eagles wouldn't go away quietly.
Trailing 48-37, Minnesota Crookston would cut the BSU lead to just three after a pair of Tormanen free throws.
Alex Page (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) would connect on two shots for the charity stripe, making it 51-49 after three quarters.
Early in the fourth, Hernandez would give the maroon and gold the lead for the first time with a layup in the paint.
The game would go back-and-forth for a majority of the final quarter. After Trinity Yoder gave BSU a one point lead with 2:20 remaining,
Bren Fox (R-Sr., C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) would give the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a layup.
Down the stretch, the Golden Eagles would get stops and connect on free throws for the five point victory.
Fox would collect her first double-double of the season and eighth of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lane would finish with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Tormanen finished with 11 points, the second time of her young career in double-figures. Frazer added a career-high nine points, while Page scored eight points and pulled down six boards.
