Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Heads East on Highway-2 for NSIC Opener with Bemidji State

#WBBNotes

·         Minnesota Crookston will look for their first win of 2022 on Tuesday night against NSIC foe Bemidji State. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a pair of home losses to non-conference foes Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. On Thursday night, the Golden Eagles led by as much as 15 in the first half, before the Wildcats would storm back for the 10 point win. The series between the two programs is tied at 21, but the Beavers have won the previous six games, dating back to 2019. The six-game win streak in the series is tied for the longest between the two programs. Minnesota Crookston won six straight games from 2009-12.
·         IT'S MILLER TIME. Emma Miller was fantastic in the two games last weekend. On Thursday night against the Wildcats, Miller scored a career-high 20 points, while dishing out three assists. Miller also played a career-high 38 minutes in the loss. On Saturday against Michigan Tech, the freshman scored 15 points, while pulling down a career-high eight rebounds and dishing out four assists. Her scoring ability and elite passing gives the Golden Eagles an unbelievable piece to the puzzle.
·         3-POINT SHOOTER. Natalie Mikrot isn't afraid to shoot the ball from long range. The freshman from Willow River, Minn., has attempted 24 shots from the field this season, 19 of which have been from deep. That is almost 80 percent of her shots. Of her nine makes from the field this season, eight of them have been from downtown. Mikrot is an outstanding shooter and she hopes that her 3-5 performance against Northern Michigan can be the sign of good things to come for the first-year Golden Eagle.
·         DOWN MEMORY LANE. Erika Lane had undoubtedly her best performance in the maroon and gold last weekend. The University of North Dakota transfer averaged 8.5 points per game, including a career-high 10 points on 3-9 shooting from the field. Lane made some huge shots down the stretch against the Wildcats and will hope to do more of the same against Bemidji State on Tuesday night.
·         TURN THE PAGE. Alex Page has been a consistent performer this season. The sophomore from Grand Forks has scored seven points in every game except one and has three rebounds in every game except one. Oh yeah, she also has three made field goals in every game except one. Page will look to continue her strong start tomorrow in the conference opener.
·         CHAAAAARRRRGEEEEE! There isn't a stat for charges taken throughout the season, but if we did have record of that, there would be a good chance Abigail Leach would lead the conference in charges taken. It is a stat and a play that doesn't seem like a big deal, but it counts just as good as a turnover. This past weekend, Leach took three charges. Leach puts her body on the line each and every game.

Bemidji State. The Beavers are off to a 2-0 start this season, including a thriller in overtime over Mayville State, a four-point victory over the Comets last Monday night in Bemidji. The Golden Eagles will be the first Division II opponent for the Beavers this season, who also have a win over Valley City State to open up the season. Bemidji State has had the upper hand in the series since 2019, winning six games in a row.

TRINITY TIME. Trinity Yoder has hardly come off the floor this season for the Beavers. The fifth-year senior is averaging 38.5 minutes per game and is averaging 20.5 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field. Yoder has shot just one three this season. Yoder is coming off of a 30 point performance against Mayville State last Monday night. In six games against the Golden Eagles, the Wisconsin native is averaging 14.6 points per game and has scored in double-figures in all but one game.

DIDN'T SEE THE BENCH. Although she didn't start the game against Mayville State, Sam Pogatchnik hardly left the floor. The sophomore from Proctor, Minn., played 43 out of the possible 45 minutes against Mayville State. The Beavers simply couldn't take her off the floor. Pogatchnik was outstanding, scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. We will see what she has for an encore tomorrow night.

50 PERCENT. After an 0-8 shooting output from deep from Maddie Schires in the season-opener against Valley City State, she didn't let that deter her confidence last Monday night. She seemingly had the green light and made the Comets pay. The senior from Wausau, Wis., finished with 17 points and was 5-10 from deep in the win. Every make she had, the Beavers needed. Running number 10 off the 3-point line will be important for the Golden Eagles tomorrow night.
