Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota State was able to come back down two sets to one to win the next two and beat the Golden Eagles in five sets (16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 4-15).
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-15 (2-8 NSIC), while the Mavericks improve to 5-13 (4-6 NSIC).
Set One
The Mavericks would come in and set the tone in the opening set, scoring 10 out of the first 11 points in the set.
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MB, New Ulm, Minn.) would halt the momentum momentarily with two straight kills.
After a
Madison Klimek (Sr., DS/Lib., Oakdale, Minn.) service ace, the Golden Eagles would get within five, but MSU would pull away for the first set win.
Set Two
Although the Golden Eagles would score the first two points of the set on a pair of Weisensel kills, the Mavericks would regain control with an 8-3 lead early on.
Much like they have done all season, the maroon and gold would fight back.
Kora Norland (So., S, Fosston, Minn.) would go on a 7-0 run from the service line, highlighted by two kills from
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.).
The Mavericks would regain a 12-10 lead, but the Golden Eagles would regain a 16-13 lead, capped off by a service ace from Cariveau.
The Mavericks would get within one at 21-20, but the Golden Eagles would score the final four points of the set, capped off by a thunderous block by
Grace Arndorfer (So., MB, Lino Lakes, Minn.).
Set Three
The Golden Eagles would get off to a much better start in set three, getting off to a 6-2 lead, highlighted by a kill and service ace from
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.).
The Golden Eagles would eventually double up the Mavericks at 12-6, with the help of a
Natalie Koke (R-Sr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) service ace.
The Mavericks would make things interesting, cutting the Golden Eagles lead to 19-16.
A Schaefer kills and an attacking error by the Mavs would get the Golden Eagles the set win and up in the match.
Set Four
The Mavericks would take an early 4-2 lead, but a kill from
Charlee Krieg (Jr., OH, Cavalier, N.D.) and a kill from Cariveau would put the Golden Eagles up by two at 7-5.
The Golden Eagles would lead 14-9, but the Mavericks would slowly inch their way back into the set.
The Mavericks would eventually come back and take a lead at 20-19 and they would pull away for a huge set four win, as we would head to a deciding fifth set.
Set Five
The fifth set would be all Mavericks, who would win the set 15-4 and the match, three sets to two.
Individual Stats
The Golden Eagles were led by the trio of Weisensel and Cariveau, who each finished with 13 kills and Schaefer, who had 12 kills. Cariveau (50) and Schaefer (47) combined for 97 total attacks in the match.
Koke finished with 41 assists and 11 digs, which gives her the fifth of her season, a career-high.
Layne Whaley (So., DS, Ashland, Neb.) finished with 20 digs in the match.

The Golden Eagles will look to slay the dragon tomorrow as they welcome in nine-time NCAA Champion Concordia-St. Paul. First serve is set for 2 P.M., from Gary Senske Court.
