Golden Eagles Battle Hard on Saturday; Lose Two matches to close out Steel City Showcase

Pueblo, Colo. – Minnesota Crookston Volleyball wrapped-up the Steel City Showcase on Saturday with a pair of matches against Rollins College (Fla.) and host CSU Pueblo.

The Golden Eagles were able to take set two against the Tars of Rollins College, but Rollins would take the final two sets for a 3-1 victory in the match. In match two, Minnesota Crookston would go up two sets to one, but the Wolves would storm back to win the final two and win the match, 3-2.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 on the season.

The Golden Eagles had a trio of attackers with double-digit kills: Lauren Wallace (R-Sr., OH, Bloomington, Minn.), Bailey Schaefer (Fr., OH, Brandon, Minn.) and Charlee Krieg (So., MH/OH, Cavalier, N.D.). Each had 10 kills in the first match.

Natalie Koke (R-Jr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) continued her impressive weekend with a career and season high 33 assists, to go along with three service aces and 15 digs. Layne Whaley (Fr., DS, Ashland, Neb.) collected 11 digs.

In match two against CSU Pueblo, the Golden Eagles got off to a really fast start, winning set one, highlighted by a 4-0 run in the middle of the set, helping the Golden Eagles win set one, 25-23.

The Wolves would win set two, but the Golden Eagles would win a thrilling set number three and was in the driver seat to win the match, going up 2-1 in the match.

In set four and five, however, it would be all Wolves, who would win the fourth set 25-12 and the fifth and deciding set, 15-3 to win the match and start the season 4-0.

Wallace continued her strong start to the season, finishing with 13 kills, as did Krieg. Koke continued to put up gaudy numbers as a setter, finishing the night with 32 assists, one away from her career-high 33, which she set against Rollins College earlier in the day. The Golden Eagles hit .119 as a team.
