Moorhead, Minn. – It was another trip to Moorhead for the Golden Eagles softball team, who was looking to complete the season sweep of the Dragons this season.
Both games were of the low-scoring affair, as the Dragons took game one by a score of 1-0, but the Golden Eagles bounced back in game two to win, 5-1. The Golden Eagles pitching staff allowed just one earned run on the day.
The Golden Eagles improve to 6-18 (2-8 NSIC), while the Dragons move to 5-19 with the split.
Game One
It was a low scoring game in the first game this afternoon.
The Dragons would score the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, following a Jordy Smith double, scoring Emma Dummer, who reached on an error.
The Golden Eagles were able to muster just two hits on the day, with one coming from
Alina Avalos (So., P/1B, Riverside, Calif.) and one from
Hannah Macias (Jr., OF, West Covina, Calif.).
In the circle,
Katie Humhej (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) was unreal, going to distance and giving up just one run (unearned), while giving up three hits and striking out six. Humhej fell to 3-7 with the loss.
Game Two
In game two, the Dragons would yet again go ahead early on in the game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead, following a Dummer double.
The Golden Eagles would answer.
Leah Macias (Jr., OF, West Covina, Calif.) would triple in her sister, Hannah and
Dana Zarn (So., IF, Winnipeg, Manitoba) to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles would score the rest of the runs from then on out. Gabby Blomdahl (So., OF, Duluth, Minn.) singled in a run in the fourth, as did Zarn, making it 4-1.
The Golden Eagles would add an insurance run in the top half of the sixth inning.
Those five runs would be all
Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) would need, as she went the distance, giving up just one earned run on seven hits. Gombos moves to 3-7 on the season.
Minnesota Crookston would get nine hits in game two, including a pair from both
Leah Macias and Zarn.
What's Next
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on the Wolves of Northern State. First pitch of the NSIC doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
