Golden Eagles Fall 72-50 to Bemidji State in NSIC Opener

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Bemidji State University used a 28-10 run in the second quarter and the first four minutes of the third quarter as they earned a 72-50 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team. The Golden Eagles had a 14-13 lead late in the first quarter, but went flat through the second quarter and early in the third stanza as they struggled to find their shot Monday night in their NSIC opener at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.

The Golden Eagles fall to 1-5 (0-1 NSIC) with Monday's loss. Bemidji State improves to 4-1 (1-0 NSIC) with the victory. Monday's game was moved from Saturday due to this weekend's Winter Storm that hit the Midwest. The Golden Eagles had previously won the last three games over the Beavers. The victory is the first for Bemidji State in the series since Dec. 16, 2017 in Bemidji, Minn.

Minnesota Crookston shot 15-of-56 for 26.8 percent on the game, and was just 1-of-14 for 7.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles finished the night 19-of-27 from the charity stripe for 70.4 percent. Minnesota Crookston improved at the line after shooting just 51.4 percent from the foul line Nov. 16 against Chaminade University of Honolulu.

The Golden Eagles also improved on their turnovers having 13 on Monday night, an improvement from 21 against Chaminade.

Minnesota Crookston was propelled by Kylie Post (So., G, Corcoran, Minn.) with 12 points on 4-of-7 from the field. Abby Guidinger (Jr., G/F, Waukesha, Wis.) added 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Julia Peplinski (So., F/C, Hustisford, Wis.) added eight points and four boards. Bren Fox (So., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) chipped in nine boards. Post added four steals, while Emma Carpenter (Fr., G, Eagan, Minn.) finished the night with four assists.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded 42-31 on the night, marking the first time they were beat on the glass on the 2019-20 season.

Bemidji State looked to Brooklyn Bachmann with 17 points and five rebounds on 5-of-9 from the field. Taylor Bray added 15 points and eight boards. Trinity Myer chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds with three assists. Claire Wolhowe and Rachael Heittola each added eight points, while Wolhowe had eight boards and Heittola finished with seven boards.

The Beavers hit 25-of-54 of their shots for a 46.3 percent clip. Bemidji State went 4-of-11 for 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 18-of-22 from the charity stripe for 81.8 percent. Bemidji State was turned over 18 times on the evening.

The Beavers jumped out of the gate with a 7-2 advantage lifted by a Wolhowe trey. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 10-0 run as they took a 12-7 lead propelled by six points from Gudiinger.

Bemidji State responded with a 6-0 run as a Heittola basket put the Beavers ahead 13-12 late in the first quarter. Bemidji State responded with a bucket from Fox to go ahead 14-13. Bemidji State closed out the frame with a bucket from Myer as they went into the quarter break ahead 15-14.

The Beavers started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 21-14. Minnesota Crookston was able to pull within 23-19 on an Alyssa Peterson (Fr., G, Menahga, Minn.) three-pointer.

Bemidji State utilized a 4-0 run to widen their lead to 27-19 with a pair of Bray free throws. The Beavers continued their big quarter as they out-scored the Golden Eagles 18-8 to go into the locker room with a 33-22 advantage.

The Beavers continued their run into the third quarter as a 10-2 run pushed their lead to 43-24 with just under seven minutes remaining in the stanza. Minnesota Crookston halted the run with a pair of free throws from Guidinger to trim the lead to 43-26.

Bemidji State extended their lead to 50-29 after a pair of Bray free throws with 3:05 left in the third quarter. Minnesota Crookston was able to trim the lead to 52-36 with 1:39 remaining in the third quarter spurred on by the play of Post.

The Beavers halted the small run for the Golden Eagles with a Wolhowe trey late in the third quarter to push the lead to 55-36. Minnesota Crookston wrapped up the frame with a pair of Paige Weakley (Sr., G/F, Kearney, Mo.) free throws as they cut the lead to 55-38 going into the break.

Bemidji State opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run as a pair of Bachmann free throws pushed the lead to 64-38. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 4-0 run as Peplinski was found in the post on a great pass from Guidinger to trim the lead to 64-42.

The Beavers responded with a 4-0 run led by Heittola to widen the lead back out to 68-42. Minnesota Crookston closed the game out on a 4-0 run to pull within 72-50 on a Peplinski bucket, but it would not be enough as Bemidji State picked up the win Monday in Crookston.

The Golden Eagles return to action against No. 11 Minnesota State University Moorhead Fri., Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
