Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – No. 22 Minnesota State University Moorhead out-scored the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team 51-17 in the opening half on their way to a 89-43 win at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn. The Golden Eagles picked up a career-high 15 points from
Alyssa Peterson but it was not enough to cool down a big night for the Dragons.
Minnesota Crookston had a better second half as they were just out-scored 38-26 in the second stanza.
The Golden Eagles fall to 1-5 (0-2 NSIC) with Friday's loss to MSU Moorhead. MSU Moorhead moves to 7-2 (2-0 NSIC) with the victory in Moorhead.
Minnesota Crookston was led by Peterson, who had 15 points on 4-of-12 from the field and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Abby Guidinger (Jr., G/F, Waukesha, Wis.) added six points, as did
Paige Cornale (So., G/F, Oak Creek, Wis.).
Bren Fox (So., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) chipped in five points and seven rebounds, while
Paige Weakley (Sr., G/F, Kearney, Mo.) added five points.
The Golden Eagles continued to struggle from the field, shooting 12-of-57 from the field for 21.1 percent. Minensota Crookston was 5-of-26 for 19.2 percent from beyond the arc.
MSU Moorhead had a strong shooting night, hitting 34-of-60 from the field for 56.7 percent and 14-of-23 from three-point range for 60.9 percent.
The Dragons were guided by 19 points and six boards from Megan Hintz. Katie Tornstrom was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field for 18 points, while Peyton Boom came off the bench for 12 points.
MSU Moorhead won the rebounding edge 46-31 as Minnesota Crookston won the battle of the glass for the second-straight game after winning the rebounding edge in their first four games.
Hintz drained a three from the top of the key to give the Dragons an early 3-0 lead. Minnesota Crookston quickly got on the board as
Mary Burke (R-Fr., F, Virginia, Minn.) found Fox in the post for a pair to trim the lead to 3-2. The Golden Eagles moved their run to 5-0 as Peterson sank a triple to give Minnesota Crookston a 5-3 lead.
The Dragons countered with a 13-0 run propelled by three-pointers from Brooklyn Liegel, Hintz and Natalie Steichen to move their lead to 16-5. Minnesota Crookston stopped the run with a Peterson trey to pull within 16-8.
MSU Moorhead extended their advantage to 21-10 with a Liegel trey. The Dragons pushed their lead to 27-12 with baskets from Nicole Brown and Tornstrom. The Dragons continued their first-half dominance with a Tornstrom old-fashioned three-point play to push the advantage to 30-12. A Tornstrom three-pointer late in the first quarter pushed the lead to 33-12 to end the first quarter on a 12-2 run. The Dragons shot an astounding 76.5 percent from the field in the opening quarter.
Neither team scored for the first 2:34 until Mariah McKeever hit a three for the Dragons to extend the lead to 36-12. A Tornstrom basket with the left hand pushed the lead to 38-12. The Golden Eagles snapped a scoreless 7:40 stretch as Carpenter found Peterson for the hoop to cut the lead to 38-14. Peterson drained a pair of free throws for the Golden Eagles to continue her strong first half and cut the lead to 40-16.
The Dragons responded with a 6-0 run ending with a Tornstrom fast-break lay-in to push the lead to 46-16 with 3:43 left in the first half. A Steichen trey pushed the run to 9-0 to extend the run to 49-16.
Minnesota Crookston halted the run as Cornale hit 1-of-2 from the line to cut the deficit to 49-17. Brown hit a jumper as time expired to send the Dragons into the half ahead 51-17.
The 17 points in the first half is the worst for the Golden Eagles since Jan. 19, 2013 against Winona State University as they scored just 12 points against the Warriors.
Minnesota Crookston was led by 10 points from Peterson in her first career start, including going 2-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Bren Fox added four points.
The Golden Eagles shot 6-of-31 from the field for 19.4 percent and were 2-of-12 from beyond the arc for 16.7 percent.
MSU Moorhead was on fire in the first half shooting 21-of-31 for 67.7 percent. The Dragons were 8-of-13 from beyond the arc for 61.5 percent. The Dragons were guided by 12 points off the bench from Tornstrom. Hintz and Steichen each added eight points.
The Dragons out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 31-18 in the first half. Minnesota Crookston had just eight turnovers in the first half compared to 11 for MSU Moorhead.
MSU Moorhead opened the third quarter on an 8-1 run following a Hintz three-pointer to push the lead to 59-18. Carpenter utilized a pair of free throws to pull within 59-20 with 6:59 left in the game.
The Dragons countered with a 4-0 run to push their lead to 63-20 with a 43-point advantage. Minnesota Crookston would close the third quarter on a 10-5 run propelled from five points apiece from Peterson and Guidinger to trim the deficit to 68-30 going into the quarter break.
Minnesota Crookston obtained the first three points of the fourth quarter with a Cornale bucket and a Burke free throw to cut the deficit to 68-33. Baskets from Boom and Hintz extended the Dragon lead to 72-33. A Cornale free throw for the Golden Eagles made it 72-34. However, a 5-0 run for MSU Moorhead as Tornstrom remained on fire from the field with a trey to put the Dragons up 77-34.
The Dragons closed out the game strong as they picked up the 89-43 win.
Minnesota Crookston will look to respond as they take on Northern State University at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. Sat., Dec. 7 at 4 p.m.
