Cleary's Historic Performance Propels Minnesota Crookston to 92-78 Win over Wayne State

Crookston, Minn.—It was a historic night inside Lysaker Gymnasium. Harrison Cleary (Sr., G, Oak Creek, Wis.) scored a season and career high 52 points on 12-27 shooting from the field, 7-13 from three and a historic 21-23 from the free throw line. Cleary tied the conference record for free-throw makes and attempts in tonight's 92-78 victory for the Golden Eagles.

The Oak Creek native was just four points shy of tying the conference watermark, set back in 1966 by Izzy Schmiesing of St. Cloud State University against Michigan Tech University.

With the 14 point victory, the Golden Eagles end their modest two game losing streak to improve to 7-4 (3-2 NSIC). The Wildcats fall to 5-8 (2-3 NSIC).

The Golden Eagles were forced to take a timeout just a minute and a half into the game, after the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 8-2 start after a pair of Nate Mohr three's.

Javier Nicolau (Sr., F, Castellon, Spain) halted the brief run for the Wildcats with his first two points of the game, to make it 8-4 Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles would take their first lead of the game at 13-12 after a Tyrese Shines (Fr., G, La Grange, Ill.) corner three.

The game would continue to be back and forth for much of the first half. Minnesota Crookston would take their largest lead of the first half after a Cleary three. The Golden Eagles would take a two point lead into the halftime break.

Cleary led the Golden Eagles with 17 first half points, followed by Malcolm Cohen (R-Sr., F, Detroit, Mich.) and Nicolau each had five apiece.

The second half started much like it did in the first half for the Golden Eagles. WSC came out and scored eight straight points, helped by Al'Tavius Jackson, who had five points in that stretch.

Brian Sitzmann (R-So., G, Savage, Minn.) hit his first of two three's on the night to make it 43-40 with 18:22 left in the game.

Minnesota Crookston would regain the lead after a Cleary three made it 50-48. That's when the Golden Eagles started to gain some separation from a scrappy Wildcats team.

Minnesota Crookston would get their largest lead of the game after a Reed Miller (Fr., F, Appleton, Wis.) trey stretched the maroon and gold lead to 63-53.

Once again, the Wildcats would chip away at the Golden Eagle lead, cutting it to just four.

The Golden Eagles were able to use technical fouls and clutch shooting down the stretch to earn the much needed 14 point victory.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 26-55 for 47 percent from the field and made 14-26 three's, good for 53 percent. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded the Wildcats 34-30 on the night.

Individually, the Golden Eagles were led by Cleary's historic 52 points, followed by Sitzmann's eight points. Miller and Nicolau each added seven points as well. Miller added a career-high nine rebounds as well.

Minnesota Crookston will look to get their third road win of the season next Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles travel to Bemidji, Minn., for a 4 p.m. date with the Bemidji State Beavers.
