Minnesota Crookston Baseball Set for Mid-Week Doubleheader with U-Mary in Watford City

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team will make their second trip to Watford City, N.D. in the last week as they take on University of Mary at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. The games will be played at Watford City Baseball Stadium, a part of the Rough Rider Center in Watford City.

The games were moved to Watford City, an all artificial turf baseball field, from Bismarck, N.D., due to weather and field conditions. This is the second series Minnesota Crookston has had moved to Watford City, N.D., as they played Minot State University in the city in western North Dakota Tues., March 27.

Both teams are looking to break out of losing streaks. U-Mary is 2-22 (0-14 NSIC) coming into Wednesday. The Marauders have lost their last 16 games dating back to a March 8 win over Tiffin University in Auburndale, Fla. The Golden Eagles enter the week with a 10-17 (0-12 NSIC) record. Minnesota Crookston has lost their last 12 games. The Golden Eagles last won March 12 as they concluded their Florida trip with a win over Pace University. Minnesota Crookston posted a 7-1 mark in the Sunshine State prior to the start of conference play.

Minnesota Crookston comes into the week hitting .266 at the plate with 133 runs, 39 doubles, 10 triples, 16 home runs and 116 RBIs. Reed Hjelle (Jr., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) is leading the team with a .371 batting average. Hjelle has a team-high 28 RBIs on the 2018 season. Anthony Stewart (R-Sr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) is coming off a big week as he hit .407 with seven runs, one double, three home runs and six RBIs. Ben Thoma (Fr., UT, Clearbrook, Minn.) is also coming off a phenomenal week. Thoma hit .385 with one run, two doubles and three RBIs.

Parker Hanson (Jr., RHP, Hawley, Minn.) has been the top starter for Minnesota Crookston. Hanson owns just a 1-5 mark, but has a 3.89 ERA in 41.2 innings pitched with 31 strikeouts and just 13 walks. Out of the bullpen, closer Zach Seipel (Jr., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched with four saves. Seipel has 31 strikeouts and 12 walks. Esten Beneda (R-So., RHP, Lankin, N.D.) has also been a shutdown guy in the pen as he owns a 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched, while Aaron Hollcraft (Jr., LHP, Crookston, Minn.) hasn't allowed a run in 7.2 innings pitched.

The Golden Eagles are looking to clean up their defense as they have a .950 fielding percentage with 46 errors on the season.

Jesus Payan propels U-Mary at the plate as he is hitting .430 with 14 runs, five doubles and 18 RBIs. Darius Barlas has missed recent games, but has a .323 batting average with 11 runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs. Travis Stevens is hitting .299 with nine runs, two doubles and six RBIs.
The Marauders have struggled on the mound as they have a 7.24 ERA. Opponents are hitting .309 against U-Mary's pitching staff. The Marauders have 111 strikeouts to 98 walks on the season. U-Mary looks to Colin Gudereit, who is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched.
