Golden Eagles Journey to Winona for Four-Game Series with Warriors

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team will hit the road for the third time in seven days as they head to Winona, Minn. for a four-game series with Winona State University Thurs., March 29 and Fri., March 30. The series was relocated to Loughrey Field in Winona, Minn., due to the field conditions of UMC Baseball Field. The games were also moved up a day due to weather forecasts for Sat., March 31.

The Golden Eagles enter the series with a 10-13 (0-8 NSIC) mark. They are looking to break out of an eight-game losing streak as they seek their first conference win. Winona State has posted a 5-12 (4-6 NSIC) mark in their first 10 NSIC tilts. The Warriors lost their last two games Tues., March 27 to Minnesota State University.

Minnesota Crookston saw their bats come out of a slump Tuesday as they scored 11 runs on 22 hits against Minot State University. The Golden Eagles had previously not produced over 10 hits in a game since March 12 versus Pace University. The Golden Eagles are hitting .268 on the 2018 season. They have been propelled by Reed Hjelle (Jr., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who is hitting .389 with nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 27 RBIs. Anthony Stewart (R-Sr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) is fresh off a two home run game against the Beavers Tuesday. Stewart is batting .351 with 25 runs, six doubles, five triple, three home runs and 16 RBIs. Ethan Mushitz (Sr., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.) is also coming off a two home run game against Minot State. Mushitz leads the team with five home runs and has 17 RBIs and 16 runs scored. Wyatt Peppel (R-So., DH, Greenbush, Minn.) has also been a run producer for the Golden Eagles. He is batting .280 with four runs, three doubles, one home run and seven RBIs.

The pitching staff enters the series with a 5.55 earned runs average (ERA). Parker Hanson (Jr., RHP, Hawley, Minn.) has guided the staff with a 3.25 ERA in 36.0 innings pitched. Hanson has 29 strikeouts to just nine walks. Zach Seipel (Jr., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) protects the Golden Eagles on the back-end as the closer is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched with four saves, 26 strikeouts and 10 walks. In addition to Seipel, several other bullpen arms have been throwing well for the Golden Eagles. Esten Beneda (R-So., RHP, Lankin, N.D.) is 0-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched with four strikeouts and no walks. Louis Gerzin (Jr., RHP, Ely, Minn.) has posted a 0-0 mark with a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts and one walk.
