Minnesota Crookston Men's Golf Signs Moroz and Poppenberg to National Letters of Intent

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's golf team announced the additions of Matthew Moroz (5-11, Edmonton, Alberta/Mother Margaret Mary H.S.) and Keegan Poppenberg (5-10, Esko, Minn./Esko H.S.) to a National Letter of Intent.

Moroz and Poppenberg are the first two signees for the 2019-20 signing class for Head Coach Brad Heppner and the Golden Eagles.

"Matt and Keegan both have the passion and commitment to golf that we are looking for in the Minnesota Crookston men's golf program," said Head Coach Brad Heppner. "We are excited to get them both on campus and watch them develop as golfers and young men."

The pair will join with a strong core of young players that will be set to return next season with Connor Humble (So., Rosemount, Minn.), Ethan Magsam (Fr., Crookston, Minn.), Ben Trostad (Fr., Crookston, Minn.), Dylan Wenzel (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.), and Joey Kekke (Fr., Argyle, Minn.) all returning to the fray. Humble comes into the 2019 spring season with a 77.4 scoring average with a top 10 finish at the Minnesota Crookston King's Walk Invite. Trostad is averaging an 80.6 on the season with a top 20 finish at the BSU Invitational, while Magsam is tallying an 82.3 average with a top 15 finish at the Augustana Invite.

Matthew Moroz (5-11, Edmonton, Alberta/Mother Margaret Mary H.S.)
Moroz comes to Minnesota Crookston from Mother Margaret Mary High School in Edmonton, Alberta. He tallied a 77.4 scoring average for the 2018 season. Moroz has had six top finishes during the 2018 golf tournament season. He is a member of the junior golf development team. Moroz was named High School Athlete of the Month in September of 2017. He tied for second at the MJT Central Alberta Junior Championship in June of 2018 after shooting a 79 and a 77.

He is the son of Joan Nelson and Darren Moroz. Moroz was born April 8, 2001. He is planning to major in business. He also enjoys downhill skiing, curling, offroading, and archery.
"Matt is a kid who also works very hard on is game every day and he plays a ton of tournament golf throughout the year," Heppner said. "I am very excited to have him coming and being part of our golf team."

Keegan Poppenberg (5-10, Esko, Minn./Esko H.S.)
Poppenberg comes to the Golden Eagles from Esko High School. He is a 2018 Minnesota State Tournament qualifier and a 2018 Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur Qualifier. Poppenberg was a medalist at the 2018 Iron Range Invite, the 2018 LCS Conference Meet, and the 2017 Grand National Invite. He is a three-year captain on the Cloquet-Esko men's golf team. He is a four-time Lake Superior All-Conference pick and a six-time varsity letter winner. He has earned multiple Minnesota Junior PGA victories.

He is the son of Brian and Dawn Poppenberg. Keegan plans to major in accounting. He was born May 11, 2001.

"Keegan is going to be a great college golfer, Heppner said. "He works extremely hard on his game and is very composed on the golf course.  I was able to watch him play on the Minnesota Players Tour this past summer.  He qualified and played in the Minnesota State Amateur last summer at Hazeltine, I'm very excited to have him coming to play and compete for us."
