Pittsburg, Kan. -- After struggling in the first round at the Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational hosted by Pittsburg State, Minnesota Crookston men's golf improved upon that first round by nine strokes to sit in a tie for 11th after 36 holes.
Central Oklahoma, the number seven team in the nation, sits in first place by four strokes above Washburn. Central Missouri and Winona State, both ranked in the top-40 nationally, are third and fourth.
The maroon and gold are tied with Rogers State and Missouri Southern for 11th.
Rhett Hughes of Central Oklahoma sits in first, two strokes ahead of Washburn Myles Tarvin and Winona State's Peyton Coahran, who are tied for second.
Andrew Wilhelm (Jr., West Fargo, N.D.) paced the way on the day for the maroon and gold, as the junior shot a second round 73 to sit in a tie for 24th. Marc Bofarull Balleste (Jr., Barcelona, Spain) and Gannon Walsh (Sr., Belgrade, Minn.) each shot a second round 78 and are in 45th and 61st, respectively. Connor Czirjak (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) is in 52nd after the first day.
The Golden Eagles had just four birdies as a team in the first round, but doubled that number in round two.
The final round will take place tomorrow morning in Pittsburg.
