Golden Eagles Host Peacocks Friday and Saturday

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team will host Upper Iowa University this weekend at UMC Baseball Field. The Golden Eagles will take on the Peacocks Fri., April 14 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. and Sat., April 15 at 12 and 2:30 p.m.

Minnesota Crookston enters the weekend with a 15-19 (9-13 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles are coming off a split on Tuesday with Bemidji State University. Minnesota Crookston is currently in a tie with Winona State University for 11th place. Upper Iowa enters the weekend with a 13-15 (9-11 NSIC) record. The Peacocks are currently in a tie for eighth place in the NSIC standings, making it an important weekend for both teams in terms of conference standings.

The Golden Eagles have been led as of late by Scott Mortenson (Jr., OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who is hitting .333 with seven runs scored and four RBI's. Reed Hjelle (So., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) has had a strong sophomore season with Minnesota Crookston. He is batting .331 with 18 runs scored, five doubles, three triples and 18 RBI's. Anthony Stewart (R-Jr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) has been one of the most dangerous leadoff hitters in the league. Stewart is batting .305 with a team-high 29 runs scored, four home runs and 23 RBI's. In addition, he has 11 stolen bases on the season.

As a team, the Golden Eagles come into the week hitting .246 with 145 runs scored, 39 doubles, 10 triples, seven home runs and 124 RBI's.

Minnesota Crookston has had a strong season on the bump in 2017. The Golden Eagles have posted a team earned runs average (ERA) of 4.91. They have been led by their back-end ace Zach Seipel (So., RHP, Eagan, Minn.), one of the league's top closers. Seipel leads the NSIC with seven saves. He has posted a 1.64 ERA on the season. Parker Hanson (So., RHP, Hawley, Minn.) has led the U of M Crookston starters with a 2-2 mark and a 3.70 ERA in 48.2 innings pitched. Freshman Justin Yutrzenka (RHP, Argyle, Minn.) is coming off a tough last start, but has had a strong year with 3-2 record and a 3.86 ERA in 42.0 innings pitched.

Upper Iowa is in their first season under the leadership of Head Coach Brandon Hunt. The Peacocks come into the weekend hitting .282 as a team. They have been led by Anthony Calton, who is batting .402 with 20 runs scored, seven doubles and 15 RBI's. Zackary Cain comes in hitting .338 with 10 runs scored and 15 RBI's, while Jacob Greco is batting .328 with 14 runs scored, three home runs and 17 RBI's.

On the bump, the Peacocks look to Brett Fanning, who is 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 36.0 innings pitched. They have also looked to freshman Ryan Munoz, who has posted a 1-2 record with a 3.65 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched. Out of the bullpen, Mitch Moser has led the way with a 2-1 mark and a 3.38 ERA in eight innings pitched. He has two saves on the year.
