Golden Eagles Set for NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Match-Up with Sioux Falls Sunday

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team will take on the University of Sioux Falls Sun., Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Golden Eagles are making their second-consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Minnesota Crookston comes in with an 18-9 overall mark. The Cougars enter the weekend with a 24-5 mark on the season. Sioux Falls won the match-up earlier in the season, 64-55.

- The UMC women's basketball team enters the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament with a 18-9 mark. The Golden Eagles are coming off a win Wednesday over Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Golden Eagles will face-off with No. 2 seed in the South, University of Sioux Falls Sun., Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m.

- Minnesota Crookston has been led on the season by Katrina Nordick, who is averaging 17.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Her fellow senior Alexa Thielman is averaging 16.3 points per game, while Alison Hughes is averaging 10.6 points and 3.1 assists per game. The Golden Eagles are averaging 73.6 points per game and giving up 66.6 points to their opponents. UMC is shooting 39.3 percent from beyond the arc and 42.7 percent from the field.

- The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the semifinals to take on the winner of Northern State University and Wayne State College. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 against Northern State and 1-0 against Wayne State on the season.

- UMC fell 64-55 to Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Feb. 5. The Golden Eagles were within two points with 8:41 left but a big fourth quarter would guide the Cougars past UMC. The Golden Eagles were led by 18 points and eight boards from Isieoma Odor. Alexa Thielman had 11 and Katrina Nordick had 10 points and seven boards. Sioux Falls was led by 30 points and eight boards from NSIC Player of the Year Taylor Varsho.

- The Golden Eagles set a school record with 1,106 fans, surpassing their totals against Minnesota State University Moorhead earlier this season and their home playoff game last year against Concordia University, St. Paul. The fan support was an added factor for the Golden Eagles as they picked up the win over Minnesota State.


- Two of UMC's seniors Alexa Thielman and Katrina Nordick continue to break milestones as they are currently No. 4 and No. 3 on the all-time scoring charts at UMC. Thielman recently set the three-point mark, surpassing Amy Kuznia. Nordick recently broke Laurie Tyson's rebounding record. Nordick is third all-time in scoring and needs 105 points to move past Karna Plaine in second, while Thielman is just behind Nordick. Nordick is also just the third player in school history to score over 1,500 points in a career, joining Jamie Zelinsky and Karna Plaine. Thielma n could become the fourth with 50 more points.

- UMC Head Coach Mike Roysland is in his 10th year at UMC after coming over after successful high school stints at Win-E-Mac and Fosston High School. The Golden Eagles' coach needs just three more wins to surpass 100 wins and become the winningest coach for UMC during the NCAA Division II era.

- Micaela Noga is coming off a strong performance for the Golden Eagles against Minnesota State. She had 12 points on 4-of-11 from the field.

- Sioux Falls enters the quarterfinals with a 24-5 mark overall. The Cougars are led by NSIC Player of the Year Taylor Varsho, who is averaging 18.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. In the post, the Cougars have Sam Knecht and Alison Klostergaard. Knecht is averaging 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds, while Klostergaard is averaging 10.1 points and 7.8 rebounds. The Cougars are averaging 73.7 points per game and giving up just 59.7 points to thier opponents. They shoot 33.8 percent from beyond the arc and 42.1 percent from the field.

- Wayne State is 17-11 on the 2015-16 season. The Wildcats look to Paige Ballinger in the post for 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Forward Maggie Schulte comes in averaging 14.8 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game, while point guard Sadie Murren is averaging 9.5 points and 4.9 assists per game. - Northern State comes into the tournament with a 22-6 mark overall. The Wolves are led by Jill COnrad's 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Her mate in the post, Lauren Deadrick, is averaging 11.0 points and 8.6 rebounds, while senior guard Devon Brecke is averaging 11.2 points per game. The Wolves have been strong defensively, giving up just 59.8 points per game. They are averaging 67. 0 points per game. Northern State shoots 34.4 percent from beyond the arc and 43.2 percent from the field.  Northern State has a UMC connection with former Golden Eagle Brittani Wiese on the bench for the Wolves as a graduate assistant coach.
