ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football team falls 66-14 to Northern State University Sat., Nov. 5 at Swisher Field in Aberdeen, S.D. Northern State used 42 first-half points to spark their victory on Saturday. The Wolves capitalized on five UMC turnovers and a blocked punt as they would control the field for the entire game.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-10 (0-6 NSIC North) on the season. Northern State improves to 6-4 (4-2 NSIC North) with the win.
Minnesota Crookston would finish with 193 yards of offense, including 146 through the air.
Nathan Cole (Sr., QB, Aliso Viejo, Calif.) went 9-of-21 for 84 yards with three interceptions as he would struggle on the game.
Adam Connette (Jr., WR, Corona, Calif.) would have UMC's lone touchdown pass as he was 1-of-1 for 62 yards and one touchdown pass. Connette would add three catches for 30 yards to his stats for the game.
Rod Stewart (So., WR, Fort Worth, Texas) had four grabs for 53 yards for UMC.
On the ground,
Andre Person (Sr., RB, Detroit, Mich.) would finish with 15 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively,
Jake Newman (Jr., DB, White Bear Lake, Minn.) led the way with eight tackles.
Ali Alkhatib (R-So., LB, Rosemount, Minn.) added seven tackles and a tackle for loss.
Will Cross (R-Fr., LB, Turtle Lake, Wis.) also had seven tackles and a tackle for loss.
Northern State would accumulate 485 yards of offense, including 309 yards on the ground.
The Wolves would be led by Stephen Erlandson, who had 104 yards on six carries for two touchdowns. Nicholas Truen added 77 yards and 14 carries. Quarterback Christian McAlvain would be a dual threat. He would go 6-of-12 for 130 yards with a touchdown and an interception. On the ground, he had six carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns. His top target on the day was Zachery Barber, who finished with three catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Matt Thorson, Channing Barber and Tyson Zemlicka all finished with interceptions. Noah McPherson would lead the Wolves with nine tackles.
The Wolves would get on the board first as McAlvain rushed for a three-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.
On the first play from scrimmage for the Golden Eagles, Cole's pass would be intercepted by Zemlicka giving the Wolves great field position at the UMC 26. They would capitalize on the turnover as Zech Culbreath rushed for a 14-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0.
The Golden Eagles would respond with an 11-play, 75-yard drive of their own culminating in an 11-yard touchdown run for Person to cut the Wolves lead to 14-7.
Northern State would come away with another turnover later in the first as Channing Barber intercepted a Cole pass to give the Wolves the ball at the UMC 27. They would score on the next play as McAlvain rushed for his second touchdown of the game, this time from 27 yards out, to make it 21-7.
After a defensive stop, the Wolves would get on the board again, this time as Erlandson rushed in for a three-yard touchdown to make it 28-7 early in the second quarter.
The Golden Eagles would be able to get a turnover of their own as
Omar Porte (Fr., DB, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) intercepted a McAlvain pass.
However, UMC would go three-and-out to give the ball back to Northern State. The Wolves would go on a 9-play, 73-yard drive ending I a five-yard rushing touchdown for Chaka Kelly to make it 35-7.
Northern State would add to their lead as their special teams came up with a big play. Joe Gorghuber would block a
Stephen Day (R-So., K/P, Eveleth, Minn.) punt that would be recovered by Brady Thielges in the end zone to put the Wolves up 42-7.
The Golden Eagles would be led in the first half by Stewart with two catches for 38 yards. Person would have 12 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Northern State would look to McAlvain, who was 5-of-9 for 127 yards with one interception through the air. He also had six carries for 54 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Truen would lead the running attack with 10 carries for 70 yards.
The Wolves would again come away with a big turnover to open the second half as Matt Thorson intercepted a Cole pass, his third interception thrown on the day. The Wolves would have great field position after a 27-yard Thorson return as the ball would be spotted at the UMC 8. McAlvain would throw his first touchdown pass of the game as he found Zachery Barber for a three-yard strike to make it 49-7.
Northern State would add to their lead when Jake Comeaux connected with Culbreath for a four-year strike to extend their lead to 56-7.
The Wolves would take their lead out to 63-7 later in the fourth quarter when Erlandson rushed for his second touchdown of the game, this time from 42-yards out.
The Golden Eagles would get on the board again early in the fourth quarter on a trick play as Connette threw his first touchdown pass of the season, connecting with
Lincoln Tappe (So., WR, Aiea, Hawai'i) for the 62-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 63-14.
UMC's defense would then stop the Wolves deep in UMC territory and force a 34-yard field goal from Nathan Shaw, which he would convert, to put Northern State up 66-14.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the 2016 season as they take on Bemidji State University in the "Hub Cap Game" Nov.12 at 1 p.m.
