Big Plays and Special Teams Leads Bemidji State Over Minnesota Crookston 76-13

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football team fell 76-13 to Bemidji State University. Two special teams' touchdowns and big plays ruled the day for the Beavers as they proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles on the day. With the win, the Beavers take home the Hubcap for the third-straight season as they win the rivalry between the two teams located just 88 miles down U.S. Highway 2. The game was played Sat., Nov. 12 at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn.

The Beavers would out-score the Golden Eagles 69-13 in the final three quarters of the game after being up just 7-0 after the first quarter.

Bemidji State wraps up the season with an 8-3 mark on the season. Minnesota Crookston concludes the season with a 0-11 record. 

Minnesota Crookston finished the day with 255 yards offensively. The Golden Eagles were led by Nathan Cole (Sr., QB, Aliso Viejo, Calif.), who was 24-of-39 with 190 yards passing. He had two touchdown passes and one interception. Cole ends his career as the all-time leader in completion percentage at 56.2 percent. Cole also finished second all-time in completions with 276 and third all-time in passing attempts.

Rod Stewart (So., WR, Fort Worth, Texas) finished the game with six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Adam Connette (Jr., WR, Corona, Calif.) had eight grabs for 52 yards and a touchdown. Connette set the single-season records for catches and receiving yards with 72 receptions and 760 receiving yards. He surpassed Mark Olsonawski for both records. 

Dante Jones (Sr., WR, Landover, Md.) added four catches for 24 yards. In the running game, Minnesota Crookston was led by Andre Person (Sr., RB, Detroit, Mich.) with 14 carries for 29 yards, while Shane Curtis (R-Fr., RB, Stewartville, Minn.) chipped in with six carries for 21 yards.

Defensively, Will Cross (R-Fr., LB, Turtle Lake, Wis.) led the way with 11 tackles. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss. Kenneth McChristion (Sr., DB, Bloomington, Minn.), Aeric Berner (So., DB, Antigo, Wis.) and Trevor Long, Jr. (R-Fr., DB, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) each had interceptions on the day. Ali Alkhatib (R-So., LB, Rosemount, Minn.) had the lone sack for UMC.

Bemidji State finished with 607 offensive yards. Jordan Hein finished the day 10-of-23 for 278 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Nick Mehlum was 5-of-8 for 72 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

In the run game, BSU was led by Gena Adams with 15 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown. 

Juwaan Richard had a big game in several aspects with a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return for a touchdown. He had one rush for 56 yards and a touchdown. He had one reception for 55 yards and a touchdown and had one kickoff return for 95 yards.

Gunner Olszewski was a big factor in the game with his punt returns. He had seven returns for 194 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown.

Defensively, BSU looked to Josh Tismer with 11 tackles. Trysten Ross had 10 tackles with one sack. 

Bemidji State got out to a 7-0 lead on the Golden Eagles as they were set up by a 42-yard punt return by Olszewski. The Beavers would go in on the next play as Blake Petrich took the direct snap and went in for the one-yard touchdown run.

Both defenses would rule the first quarter as UMC would be able to keep Bemidji State at bay for the rest of the opening quarter.

However, the second quarter would be a different story as Bemidji State out-scored the Golden Eagles 28-0. 

The Beavers would get the quarter started as Richard rushed for a 56-yard touchdown on the end-around to make it 14-0.

After a defensive stop by Bemidji State, Olszewski would put together another big return as he took it 72-yards to pay dirt to put the Beavers up 21-0.

The Golden Eagles would look to be getting something going on the ensuing drive as they moved the ball to the BSU 42. However, Cole would throw an interception to Kameel Al-Khouri stopping the UMC drive.

Bemidji State would be able to take advantage as Hein found Blake Holder for the 39-yard strike to put the Beavers up 28-0.

The Beavers would add to their lead later in the quarter as Hein hooked up with Richard for his second touchdown of the first half, this time on a 55-yard strike to make it 35-0.

The story of the first half was Olszewski's return game as he set up the Beavers for success with five returns for 188 yards for an average of 37.6 yards per return. 

The Beavers had 280 yards of offense in the first half led by Hein, who was 8-of-20 for 151 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception. Hein also rushed six times for 42 yards in the first half.

UMC had 136 yards of offense in the first half. The Golden Eagles were led by Cole, who was 13-of-20 for 75 yards. 

The Beavers would start the second half at a ferocious pace as Richard built on a strong first half by taking the opening kickoff of the half and returning it 95 yards for the touchdown. The score was the second return of the game by BSU's special teams.

The Golden Eagles would answer with a 10-play, 72-yard drive, culminating with a Cole 11-yard touchdown pass to Connette to cut the lead to 42-6 after a missed Mike Maw (Sr., K, White Bear Lake, Minn.) extra point.

The Beavers would strike quickly as they scored on their first play from scrimmage. Hein would find Holder for an 82-yard touchdown pass to extend Bemidji State's lead to 49-6.

The Golden Eagles would get their second score of the half on the next drive as Cole connected on a beautiful pass to Stewart for the 27-yard strike to cut the Beaver advantage to 49-13.

UMC would be able to get the ball quickly after a great interception on a diving catch by Berner. However, the Golden Eagles would not be able to do anything offensively.

Bemidji State would respond after the stop as Hein found Dexter Taylor, Jr. on the screen pass. Taylor would take the pass 45 yards to pay dirt to extend the lead to 56-13.

The Beavers would get a score at the end of third quarter as fullback Petrich took the snap and did a jump pass, which he completed to Tucker Forsgren for a 3-yard touchdown to make it 63-13.

Bemidji State would add two scores in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown came when Gena Adams rushed for a 23-yard touchdown to make it 70-13. Mehlum would hook up with Jacob Anderson for the 20-yard strike later in the fourth quarter as they extended the lead to 76-13.

The game was the last one for 16 Golden Eagle seniors. Tyman Hayashi (Sr., OL, Kalihi, Hawai'i), Drew McDurmin (Sr., OL, Aiea, Hawai'i), Maw, Cole, Jake Christopherson (Sr., DL, Sturgeon Lake, Minn.), Stan Harvey (R-Sr., TE, Long Prairie, Minn.), Tanner Walsh (R-Sr., DB, Gaylord, Minn.), Isaiah Armstrong (Sr., DL, Fairfield, Calif.), Person, McChristion, Jarrad Lewis (Sr., OL, Houston, Texas), Jones, Anthony Talford (Sr., FB, Fresno, Calif.), Eric Rodriguez (Sr., OL, Woodlake, Calif.), Casey Kraska (Sr., DL, Stephen, Minn.) and Ryan Hutton (Sr., WR, Thief River Falls, Minn.) have all played their final game.
