MORTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's golf team travelled to Dacotah Ridge in Morton, Minn., to finish last two rounds of the NSIC/US Bank Championship. The first two rounds took place in the fall in the first week of October in Brainerd, Minn., and were finished up 25 and 26 of April in Morton.
Leading all the way and winning the entire championship were golfers from Augustana College. The Vikings put together four very strong rounds, which gave them the overall lead by 22 strokes over the second-place Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. Sierra Langlie shot a total of 312, which was the best score of the meet, with par +24 (the course was par 72, and her scores were 77, 78, 80, 77). Her fellow teammate Emily Israelson was only 7 swings behind her, with par +31.
Should Augustana College Vikings keep up their successful ways in the NCAA DII Central Region Tournament at Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Okla., they could be heading to the NCAA DII Women's Golf Championships in The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
In the overall standings for the championship, the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles took 11
th spot out of 12 teams participating, coming in 45 swings before the last-place Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons, but also chasing the winner (Augustana) by 255.
UMC did have one golfer in the top 25.
Katie Sheetz (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn./Biology)
kept her strong game all season, and she did not let the last two rounds of the 2014-2015 season be any different. Her first two rounds (in the fall portion of the championship) set her back a little, but she came back and finished the third and fourth with 91 and 81 in her scorecard. Even though a decent score on a par 72, it still meant she ended up writing down a score of par +62, 38 strokes more than the leader Langlie.
The junior Sheetz concludes her season for the Golden Eagles as a team leader with an 84.7 average in 15 rounds of golf. Her season-best came undoubtedly in Bemidji, when she took first at their invite with a par +5 performance. Placing tenth at Augustana's invite just a week ago surely helped Sheetz' confidence and comfort on the course before closing out the year at Dacotah Ridge.
Three University of Minnesota Crookston women took 44
th through 46
th positions, when
Marina Farrow (Fr., Arlington, Texas/Biology),Baillee Hauser (So., Raymond, Minn./Health Management) and
Ashlee Humble (Fr., Rosemount, Minn./Accounting) swung a par +113, +116 and +117, respectively. The two freshmen and a junior all showed slight improvements compared to their fall championship performances, when all but one score were upper 90s and 100s, then. This weekend, however, all were able to get their last rounds under 100 strokes.
Humble and Farrow ended up being second-best Golden Eagles average-wise, both with 97.9 strokes. Hauser was not too far behind the two freshmen, scoring 98.4 average herself.
Rikki Roscoe (Jr., Big Stone City, S.D./Communication) did not participate at the spring portion of the championship, therefore her 99 and 108 fall scores were not included in UMC's total rankings.
Last, but not least, was the team's sole senior,
Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science). Competing in Golden Eagle uniform as a volleyball player did not allow her to be part of the fall portion of the championship. She was, however, able to participate in the spring rounds three and four. She carded 100 in the third, and improved for her last round of intercollegiate golf, putting down a 96-stroke round. Having played six rounds of golf in her senior season, her average falls to 100.5 strokes. Mikutowski will be graduating in May, leaving behind Head Coach
Mike Annese with five ladies.
Sheetz and Roscoe will enter their senior competing season,
Bailee Hauser her junior year, and
Marina Farrow and
Ashlee Humble their sophomore seasons
as bright things look to be in the future for a young squad under Coach Annese.
