Women’s Golf Closes Out 2015 at NSIC/US Bank Championship

CROOKSTON, Minn.- With the semester quickly coming to an end, so is the season of the University of Minnesota Crookston women's golf. The Golden Eagles are set to trek down to Dacotah Ridge in Morton, Minn., to compete in the rounds three and four of the NSIC/US Bank Women's Golf Championship.

The entire championship consists of total of four rounds. Rounds one and two have been played in the fall in early October. Then, the Golden Eagles ranked tenth. They managed to beat Minot State University Beavers and Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons. UMC swung their clubs for a total of 774 strokes, which comes down to 198 above par. They trailed the leader of the two rounds, Augustana College Vikings, by 126.

Katie Sheetz (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn./Biology) was at the helm of the Golden Eagle golfers then and now. Her 34 strokes above par in the two rounds sent her to a four-way tie for the 21st position overall. Unfortunately, the closest UMC player was not till the 48th rank. It was Ashlee Humble (Fr., Rosemount, Minn./Accounting), carding 202 (par +58).

Going four ranks lower, in a two-way tie with each other were fellow UMC golfers Marina Farrow (Fr., Arlington, Texas/Biology) and Baillee Hauser (Jr., Raymond, Minn./Health Management). They were able to get a score of 204 (par +60), leaving the last Golden Eagle, Rikki Roscoe (Jr., Big Stone City, S.D./Communication), in a tie with another golfer for the 54th spot. She had three more strokes above par compared to Farrow and Hauser.

Mike Annese, the women's golf head coach is hoping his golfers can repeat or even beat the best ranking UMC has had in the spring portion of the 2014-2015 season. The very last meet of the regular season Golden Eagles travelled to, they were able to secure a great, fourth spot. Once again trailing Augustana College, this time by 112 extra strokes over the Vikings. Sheetz played her best golf all spring, fitting in the top 10, carding only 18 higher than the leader.

Both Sheetz and the entire team, however, had their best meet overall in the fall, placing second at the Bemidji State Invite. Her average have significantly improved with that result, currently at 84.7. Humble and Farrow sit at an identical average of 97.9, closely chased by Hauser's 98.4. Roscoe has been swinging a 101.3.

The entire team, featuring six players, will attempt to close out their 2014-2015 season on the best note possible. It will be the last intercollegiate athletic event for the sole senior, Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science). A two-sport athlete (volleyball and golf) did not have a chance to compete in the first two rounds of the championship due to her role on the volleyball team, but will have a chance to play two more rounds of golf for UMC. Her score will not count towards the team total, but it is a great opportunity for her regardless. She sits at a team's fifth-best average 100.5 and looking to finish her senior season strong.
